My Flavia is now in winter hibernation so I am tackling a few jobs that I've been outing off, so....

The oil filler tube has a rubber pipe running into the air box for the Carb, but is there anything "clever" in the crank case breathing on a Flavia that I should consider servicing? For example a PCV valve that might need testing or a gauze filter to trap oil droplets that might need cleaning?

I have heard of the wire gauze in the 'fatter' section being rusty and breaking up.

if the car has been is use it would be safe to assume that oil mist in the breather would keep the gauze in good condition. If cleaned due to heavy deposits I would reoil!!

If it is like a Fulvia one, there is a very good chance it has rotted. On a Fulvia you can sometimes spot the telltale brown deposit at the bottom of the breather tube, indicating nasty bits of rotten brillo-pad working their way into the sump ......

I think I did every Fulvia I that I had over the years, so at least 5 or 6 and they were all rusty to some extent or another

I wrote an amateur's guide to repairing them a few years ago which was published in Viva Lancia (I am sure someone can find a ref. to this if required - I can't remember, but about 10 yrs ago !)

Unlike all later Fulvias my 2c never had this fitted, just an open to the atmosphere breather pipe, If I remember correctly the wire mesh was replaced by a stainless steel pot scourer?

Its differently organised on a Fulvia - the mesh is in a pot that gets all the condensation from short runs and when it rots (I havent seen it on my Fulvias but did change every one for stainless mess as a precaution) it drops into the crank case.

I think the lttle mesh on the Flavia is in the breather hose between the oil filler and the air box. Still a potential problem but less worrying.
