I'm very worried, it seems as from Jan 1st, the MOT has become a much bigger challenge to owners of classic cars. For example, all suspension components are now inspected for the smallest defect including split grease covers etc and inside, all interior lights must work as must all seat adjusters and there are a hundred other things designed to force our cars off the road. I hate these people who have nothing better to do! Why can't they leave us alone?

Its not as bad as you think, Huh? interior lights means, all warning lights like abs, and other handling control lights like esp  etc , main beam and indicator warning lamps have been in the test for years, if you have a tow bar all the electrics will be tested. So I think the Appia and Fulvia will survive ok Smiley

Speak to your mot chap before you panic.
A lot of scaremongering again.
it's basically safety warning lights, srs, abs
maybe hids without cleaning or poor pattern.
It won't cover an illuminated engine management light
or check panel lamps.
To be honest why would you have split grease
covers on a well.maintained classic car.

Also for 3  months it should be advisory only

Our little Dyane (remember it gave you a blue rinse at the Cotswolds Economy Run this year...) passed its MOT last week with three advisories (both rear wheel bearings starting to make a noise, and an exhaust leak that was not load enough or in danger of falling off - leak at manifold (which interestingly explains my headaches while navigating for Sarah)). My pre mot check included putting the horn connector back on.... nothing else since we bought the car as an unknown quantity last March.

I will report further when OVS goes up for its trial later this month.

Hi Tim,

Had the same problem with Daughters Dyane with the hot air take off for the heater taking the heat from the exhaust manifold, my Fiat 500's were the same idea and as equally prone to gassing you!

Just back from my friendly MOT station with another year (actually 13 months) driving authorised for OVS901. This is the first MOT obtained in my ownership.

My tester said that while he could fail it for a missing (probably snapped off) split pin on the rear crossmember, and the trafficators were unlit (if fitted they should be lit apparently), and he did not want to test the brakes so took my word for them working (!! which they do very well...)

He went on to say that the new rules would not affect any of my Fulvias or Aprilia, but that newer cars were a different story.

He then said that the latest to come out of VOSA is that old cars such as my Aprilia (didnt say how old but I may have got the idea all tax free cars) were going to be subject to a six month test which would be simpler and cost slightly less but still give extra revenue to the govt (in place of driving tax free...).

Any one else heard this???

Last thing I read was that the Government were looking to take some old cars out of the loop altogether?

There is a proposal to exempt vehicles built before 1960 from the MOT Test and the consultation paper issued by the Department of Transport can be found at http://www.dft.gov.uk/consultations/dft-2011-27.  I'm not sure whether the Club has made any formal response but if anyone individually wants to comment they will need to get their skates on; the consultation closes on Thursday.
