Aprilia muffler (silencer)
« on: 20 June, 2011, 11:08:15 PM »
An outside question, but does anyone have an original muffler that they could give me the dimensions from? And maybe some photos?
Failing that what would be a good replacement muffler for my 1st series Aprilia, would be nice if it looked similar to the original.
Thanks
Noel

Silencer, one of those roundish things that lives near the end of the exhaust pipe :)
Just looking for ideas on what would be best. Obviously the best match to the engine, the sound and finally appearance.

I know Noel is refering to the "muffler" in his exhaust system. On a related subject, what sort of clearance should the exhaust pipe have under the body?. The man who fitted mine a couple of weeks ago, managed to leave only an inch clearance in places. I think I will be lowering it a bit.

I've just played around with mine - seems original design round single box. Made up new hanger rubbers for rear. Will take some photos this afternoon and measure.

The down/front pipe has a heat shield between the pipe and body.

Rear (only) box is a cylinder 51cm long, 16cm diameter, offset so entry and exit pipes are biased toward the top of the box. It hangs in the space between the rear seats and the tortion bar and is 10cm (4inches) away from the car floor.

If you find a suitable standard can to fit perhaps it could be posted??

Thanks for the pic and info Tim. My current silencer is almost the same size, 54cm x 15cm, but obviously nothing like an original. The baffle inside has come adrift hence the need for a replacement. I've been chasing a mystery engine vibration and this might be part of the problem, maybe! Unfortunately Robin I'm on the other side of the world so a bit far away from your exhaust people. My local sheet metal company could fabricate one for me if I can come up with a drawing, failing that I'm see what I can find off the shelf.

Interesting vents cut into the floor along the transmission tunnel of your car Tim, I haven't seen that before.

Noel

Your silencer has a diffential offset entry/exit pipes as opposed to mine where the offset is on same side so the silencer sits up in the space rear of the rear seats and has max ground clearance.

Re the trans tunnel vents I think these seem original (S2??) - anyone like to comment further??

I have a gearbox / clutch cover which has similar fluting. I had wondered whether or not this was a Series 2 feature. On the exhaust pipe front, I seem to remember a period road test which mentioned a fish tail being fitted to the exhaust. Would this have fitted by the factory? or perhaps Alperton?.

Hi Noel
Just got back from the S P Rally so only just picked up your post.
I have a sketch I made of the silencer that was on my car when I bought it which I am pretty sure was a genuine original. From memory the entry was offset to the top of the can and the exit was offset to the bottom. Inside there are a series of conical baffles.I dont have a scanner so can't ad the picture here but will post it off tomorrow. I allways promised I would make one for my car but the temporary job I had done in 1981 is still holding out so I never got around to it!

G'day Ben,
That would be great, we might have the best sounding Aprilia at Castlemaine!
If anyone else has a photo that would also be very helpful. The parts diagram only gives me a rough idea of what it was like. Since I need a new silencer I thought I might as well have a go at getting one as close to an original as possible, it will most likely outlast me anyway...

Looking at Noel's Tav33A spurred me to dig out the S2 Tav. This clearly shows the offset and the fishtail end!!! I can say from the drawings I have the original hanger straps (albeit I had to re make the flexible bit!).
