Any gearbox guru's out there?  My S2 coupe is fairly quiet in neutral and when coasting but under load is very noisy, does anyone have experience of this and know which bearing tends to go first or any other likely causes.

Hi, i`d say that it was the input shaft bearings.... if the noise is evident all the time, under light load.... not sure if new bearings are available for those boxes, not had one apart for a LONG time..

Drained the oil today and found what looks like part of a tooth on the mag plug Sad  Looks like I will have to fit my spare box which has been lying under a tarp in the back garden, lets hope that one isn't buggered as well Roll Eyes

Not meant to be a trivial response  . .  probably my ignorance but worried that gearbox on my S3  had got very noisy then realised that rubber grommet surrounding gearstick had cracked.
Fitted a new one (Omicron) and was surprised how quiet it all was.

Hope your problem is as trivial . .

fitted my spare gearbox last week and luckily it seems ok Grin Have not stripped the old one down yet but there is loads of backlash between the drive flanges so it would seem that the problem is at the crownwheel/pinion end.

Dismantled the noisy gearbox today and found the pinion teeth were as sharp as razors, think I was lucky to get back from Beaulieu without stripping the gear completely Shocked On the plus side the other gears and bearings look ok so they can join the other spares/junk at the back of the garage.
