According to my local testing station, you can MOT test any vehicle if you want to , regardless of its exemption status. Likewise if you change the complete chassis or body eg; Land Rovers, it would still be exempt if the chassis number complied age wise.
No one can predict how the statutewill be implemented post May 2018.

From May 20 2018 new rules will come out to change the tax class and MOT waiver in the UK to for certain vehicles over 40 years old.

The attached guidance from DfT means if your Lancia has been modified substantially but these modifications are over 30 years old a then it can be Tax/Mot free.

Disclaimer - I am in favour of retaining the MOT for cars used on our highways and byways!
