well folks, if you have been reading robin's thread about his wheels this is about their visit to wales to be balanced, at first inspection all seemed ok and no major drama's , only problem was that robins adaptor wouldn't fit my balancer, dad called again to machine out center bore to 40mm, this was finished in time for when i closed up this evening, i collected it and went about sorting out the balance issue, it became apparent after spinning up the first wheel that the tyres weren't infact fitted correctly and the beads of the tyre hadn't popped onto the outer edges of the rims making the tyres appear like those fitted to a clowns circus car bouncing up and down, also i had noticed the vaves were hardly petruding through the rims and at a perculiar angle, best thing to do was strip the tyres off the rims and start again...............................

when the wheels were stripped there was nothing out of the ordinary and no damage to tyres and tubes so i set about re fitting them, plenty of soap was brushed onto the rim 1st and onto the beads of the tyre as the previous fitter had obviously had problems with getting the tyres to "pop on" propperly, when they were fitted plenty of maintanance spray was applied again to the bead area's (a trick we use on run flat tyres) to help them pop on, inflated , popped , RESULT  Grin ready for balance next

next we come to balancing, the rudge type wheels need to be held on the balancer at both ends of the spline, most tyre fitters will simply use 1 cone to support the wheel and rely on the rear face of the wheel being "true" to but against the face plate of the balancer, this CANNOT be relyed on on this type of wheel , when fitted to the car the rear taper on the inside edge takes the load not the rear face of the wheel as my assistant will now..............

also on the outer face where the spinner contacts the wheel most would put a cone inside the end of the spline, this too is inaccurate and NOT ROUND!! it is important to locate the wheel by the outer edge taper as again my assistant will demonstrate..............

now.......more problems, because of the depth of the spline at the rear we had to use 2 cones to space out from the balancer so that the rear face plate didn't seat against the balancers face plate leaving the inner cone to wobble around doing nothing, these were both fitted to the balancer as shown below, then the wheel , the robins adapter and finally the locking handle

the first "dynamic " ballance was the done, unfortunatly much to the nature of this type of "hand made tyre" it was proving impossible to get enough weight onto the wheel where needed, we opted for a simple "static " balance as used on most modern motorcycles and as we have done on my augusta and fathers astura, this involves just sticking weights to the center of the rim rather than each side of the rim, its not ideal on a modern car cruising at speeds of 70>80mph but ideal on a pvt or similar cruising at speeds of 50>60

Good grief! static balanced they may be but psychologically unbalanced they almost certainly will be. Shocked No doubt I'll have to lie them down in a darkened room for a day or two on their return. Minera Tyres North Wales Syndrome me thinks! Grin

Wheels came back from James during the week and I fitted them today. Then did 40 fantastic miles of vibration free motoring. James, you're a star!  Kiss

Oh, better give Mattie one too.  Kiss
