Hi There
My ancient warrior has just blown out its coolant. From initial cursory inspection the water seems to be emerging from the bottom of the clutch/bellhousing region. The picture in my manual is far from clear but the most likely explanation would seem to be a blown core plug behind the flywheel.
Does anybody have any ideas/relevant experience/words of encouragement? The car is C-reg ie possibly the oldest one left but pretty tatty.I have had to put lots of byepasses around the fuse-box! However it had a recent new head gasket and water pump.Is it worth any further effort?

Hi Ben,
Sounds like it's still worth saving particularily with it's age, someone has borrowed my early Y10 Manual so I've just had a look on eper, there's a sizeable core plug behind the bell housing 50mm 7579570 and according to the 2005 copy of eper was then available for the princely sum of £1.23, I've tried to upload the relevant pages for you but the upload facility seems to be up to it's usual tricks saying the file is too large, when the 2 pages only come to 361KB total Angry

Thanks for response Brian.I will definitely pull it apart as soon as I get the time if only to satisfy my curiosity. It is just such a major job for such a trivial part.Still I will no doubt find plenty of other things needing attention along the way!

Finally got around to taking the gearbox out of the Y10 today and sure enough hidden behind the flywheel is a 50mm core plug with a big rusty hole through the middle of it.I bought a large box of assorted sizes at the NEC in Nov.but sods law prevails as ever-----the biggest one in the box is about 47mm!!!
Would you expect my local Fiat dealer to recognise the part no that you looked up Brian? I am afraid that 'eper' doesn't mean much to me.

Hi Ben,
I don't see why not, as 7579570 was a current part in 2005 being used in the "Fire" engine of which there have been many variants, and I would have thought a 50mm core plug would be a standard part used across a lot of the Fiat group model range, I'm sure Kevin McBride who works in Fiat Parts should be able to check if he reads this, but I'd certainly try your local Fiat parts department. unfortunately the eper site I use is too busy for me to get onto it present.

Ben,
Just found these on ebay,
 http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/B769-10-pack-of-10-core-plugs-1_W0QQitemZ310073608160QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM?hash=item4831d3c7e0

It might be worth asking the seller how deep they are,  or alternatively, grind them down to fit. you'd have enough to play with Grin

Thanks for your efforts Brian. I have just got back from my local Hyundi dealer (and Fiat/Alfa tho' you wouldn't notice as you drive by) who had the proper plug on the shelf and were able to identify via your number even 'tho it was superceded in 2003 according to them.
I dont think even though I pride myself on my ingenuity that I could grind a 1" plug dowd to 50mm!!!
I just have to gather my strength again now to put it all back together.

Pleased you've got the right item Ben, my reference to grinding was meant to convey that you reduce the depth of the open face, rather than the diameter if necessary Wink
Anyway, you're correct with part number change new one is 55182787, can't remember where I got the old one!
Here is the page from eper and all the other models it's used on, just about everything as I suspected.
