£100 for a new alternator isn't a bad price, I can sell you a used one for £50 but if it stops working 2 weeks later you are pretty much on your own.......

Ahhh the phrase I didnt want to here  "thats not too bad" or "thats cheep".  Well Im just waiting on a couple of emails at the mo but with christmas not too far away I think the car will just have to sit and wait till I can afford one.  Thanks for the offer though.

I bought a new one for my 8v back in July from my local Auto Electrical company (www.hallselectrical.com) for £82.68 plus VAT with no trade discounts or special deals.Forget e-bay and try yellow pages!

Mine came for about £70 from my local motor factors a couple of years ago.  The front bearing had gone!  Well actually they took my old one and rebuilt it with new windings, bearings, brushes etc.  That way it was bound to fit.

Now the front bearing has gone on my new integrale.  The alternator was the only part I didn't change over from the old one.  I'll probbaly strip this one myself and just replace the bearing; well unless I find lots of other trouble.  By the way I think the bearings go because the alternoator gets such a lot of water through it when competing on rallies in the rain.  At least it's not too dificullt to replace...

Now for a more technical question:-

Where can I get a more powerful alternator to fit my 8-valve?  The standard one is just 65 amps and, with all the lights I run (430 watts without the foglights in full rally mode), 80/85 watts should stop the voltage dropping right away when the car idles for a while.
