It was the rust scandal that helped me buy my first Lancia, nobody would touch them ,the trade panicked and the prices dropped. As an 18yr old with very little money to spend on a car it was like winning top prize in a raffle . I bought a 2yr old Beta sedan for £750.00 the guy couldn't take the money off me quick enough. The car was so full of anti rust wax I think it was called "Crilagard" that the drain holes in the bottom of the doors were blocked , I had to stick a knife in to the holes to clear the wax and let the rain water out. The car never really rusted but it ended it's life stuffed into the side of a trailer , that's another story. Shocked This started me on a life long obsession . Wink

Rallied a 1600 S1 Beta for a year or so without too many rust problems. I do recall the front suspension strut appearing through the bonnet on one occasion! Even managed to sell it to a guy who worried the life out of me to sell it to him, although I tried hard to put him off and certainly wouldn't have bought it myself! Shocked

I'd just started my career with Fiat at the time when this happened. I remember were were sent a number of subframes which were to be fitted to cars under warranty (that needed them of course). In the early 90's when we were clearing old stock, they were still in the stores, unused, and with a mild surface rust from damp.
Odd how these days you hear news reports of 'a million' cars of various makes being recalled because of brake defects, or exploding steering wheels or somesuch,  and yet months later all is forgotton, and sales of the same makes are on the up.
Contrast this with people nowadays who've never seen, heard of, or even know of the existance of Lancia, yet they can tell you, without hesitation, that they were all 'rustbuckets'.
I blame the parents !!
