In-line fuel filter
«

The Fulvia hasn’t been running smoothly as so thought I’d change plugs, air filter and fuel filter. However my car doesn’t appear to have one of the inline plastic filters.
Where’s the best place to fit one - in the rubber line exiting the metal fuel and before the pump or in the post-pump tubing under the air box somewhere ? In fact are they useful, required? The car was “restored” before I bought it but I have no idea how the fuel system was cleaned up.
Is it possible because of a lack of a filter that gunge has got into the carbs or elsewhere to cause the rough running?

Causes for rough running can several ones in addition to the changes you had done. However, it is good practice to install a fuel filter shortly after the end of the metal tubing coming from the tank. S1 cars had a fuel pressure regulator with filter.

Best to fit before the pump and visible. If rust/fine dust is coming from the tank you will see the filter getting clogged. Spirited driving is required.. As you mention rubber pipe it is also a good idea to change these to the latest ethanol resistant piping (or the green blue Cavis Benz original flexible pipe).

Worth thinking about fitting a Filter King which regulates the fuel delivery as well as filtering.

100% agree, mine's been fitted for over 20 years.

A filter king (filter pressure regulator) is recommended for Fulvias without a fuel return pipe (essentially S1) and those fitted with an electric pump such as Facet red top etc as a precaution of those pumps operating at higher pressure than c3psi
