Morning,

does anyone have a diagram from the parts book of the B20 srs 2 (or 1) door handle mechanism they could post please?...my outside handle has seemingly disconnected itself from the inner mechanism (door opens fine using the inside handle) and before taking the door card off and disassembling it all I would like to review what I am getting into and whether it can be fixed from the outside.

many thanks

David.

Hi David,  I've taken some picture of an S3 B20's mechanism which I think is the same, having the early S1-3 non-pushbutton set up, usually complete with droopy external handles due to wear between the square operating rod from the external handle (like a house door) and the door's internal mechanism. This is fixable by various means - building up with weld / brazing and filing works.

Let me know if you need more info.

William

Here some more photos of same mechanism, from another 3rd series. Hope this is helpful!

Evening William and Sebastien,

thank you for the photos.  do you have any photos of how the external door handle (ie the droopy one!) attaches to the internal mechanism?  That's the part i think has failed...

kind regards
David.

Hi David,

You can see where the outer handle's shaft goes into the mechanism on the rhs of Sebastien's last photo, the square hole below the lock's latch.

I'll remove the lock from my project S3 and clean and photograph it if that's helpful, but I think you probably have little alternative to the removal of your door trim and the lock mechanism to find out what the issue is and to have it repaired (or find a replacement).

If the outer handle is still in place (it's secured on the inner side of the mechanism with a large-headed machine screw, visible in my first photo) where it should be and isn't sliding out of the door, then I think something's awry within.

Best, William

Sorry to be tardy on this, but while restoring the s.2 some 15 yrs ago, was into the differences in the doors and locks. The s.2 lock is the image with two locks (I think). Then an s.3 lock  from Nigel Trow.

The door shots - can't recall which is the s.2, and which is something else (s.3? B50).

Hope this helps. Smiley

Interesting to see the two sides alongside each other and the differences.

I took one of mine out of the project S3 today and partially dismantled it. Oh dear, so many problems (aka, so much fun ahead). Someone had forced the interior handle so hard that the sliding plate (which I don't think can be removed without some fairly major surgery, though Nigel Trow's photo shows that this is probably the way to go) is bent and doesn't make contact with the lock's detent springs. Other problems:
- brass latch has big flats on it where it's struck the striker plate (clue in the name) and should ideally be built up before re-chroming, or replaced
- the spring-loaded ball bearing under the latch (neat bit of what I assume is anti-rattle technology) has worn flat on one side and chewed up the main plate
- the square operating rod from the outer handle had been packed out with thin sheets of metal to compensate, rather unsuccessfully, for wear

Anyway, back to David's issue. Below is some annotation of one of the photos Geoff supplied. Please excuse me if my labelling and naming isn't clear.

David, I wonder if 4. and 1. might have somehow slipped out of alignment, allowing the outer door handle to rotate without them (4. and 1.) engaging with each other.

If this isn't the problem, then perhaps some packing pieces between the square rod and the brass rotating mechanism in the lock have come adrift and a more permanent repair is needed (see above).

Best of luck and let us know how it goes. W

Have found the issue.  The outer door handle is attached to the square sectioned shaft (that actuates the door mechanism) by a very small approx 1.5mm diameter slotted spring pin that goes through the small hole in the base of the door handle and locates in the small hole in the end of the square section shaft. Mine had worn/broken (its present in the picture in 2 very small pieces) - so I just need to replace that and then all's well again.

many thanks for everyone's help.

David.
