Finally got round to dropping of the engine parts at my local machinists. He will pressure test the block and heads, scope the wear in the bores, measure the wear on the crank and check the pistons. If all that is OK we will decide on if new pistons and liners are needed or just some new rings and bearing shells for the crank with a skim for the heads.

Hi all
Went to see the engine man and he had some bad news but also some good news. The bad news was the bores are worn and need reboring, the crank is looking OK and the heads will be OK after a light skim to get all the gunk off. The cost of the new pistons will be balanced by the fact we should have all 128BHP to enjoy along with no problems for a long time engine wise.
Has any one any thoughts on reboring the liners in situ. the engine man was concerned that taking them out and putting the old ones back in was asking for problems with the sealing.

Hi all
A thing at the back of my mind for a long time has been the state of the wiring as on the Appia it was totally fritzed and I had to rewire the car. I had tried to put a battery into the tray in front of the radiator but it did not seem to want to go in too big? a kind member had measured the spec on his car and the problem dimension was the width at 175mm. Out came the tape and we measured our gap and it was only 160mm. However as the engine and radiator were out I got into the engine bay with a 175mm wide battery and after a bit of pulling and pushing of the front skirt it was in. Of course when it was connected up we soon had a nice burning spell and a major panic from me. However after it was disconnected and I had calmed down it turned out to be the starter motor feed shorting to the body work Phew! To get some power to the lights and things I taped the starter motor lead to the wire to the fuse box? and low and behold we had side lights, front fog light, indicators and headlamps (via a very nonstandard switch under the dash to a pair of Lucas sealed beams) So far so good no burning smells or crackling noises but we had no panel lights or horn. So feeling brave I turned the ignition key to start and several of the gauges sprung into life and a loud rumbling from the rear confirmed the fuel pump was doing some thing. Feeling very pleased I disconnected the battery and started looking for my Flamina CD from Viva Lancia so I could print out a wiring diagram and at least un fuse the fuel pump to stop it getting damaged running on empty (the tank is empty...I think) Of course the CD is in a 'safe place' so will turn up the day after I buy a new one.

Bear in mind that the wiring diagram for the 3B is different to the earlier - 2 speed wipers etc. The correct one is in the 3B owners supplement booklet. I do have a copy somewhere if you need it.

That would be most useful as there are a few stray wires under the bonnet and the modern switch for the headlamps needs investigating.

Two speed wipers is interesting as I was just starting to think that the single speed ones on my berlina wouldn't be much use if it actually rained.

I have replaced the non working 2 speed motor with a VW golf item, just visible in the attached photo.  This could be a solution if you want to upgrade your berlina. It requires a little modification to the wiper frame/bracket but uses the original crank. The wiring is different - I modified the switch to make it work but this is quite a faff and requires some machining. You could keep your switch and add a changeover under the dash to change speeds.

Hi all
Bit more exploring of the electrics yesterday revealed we still have wipers but only single speed, dash lights after a fight with the rheostat, horn sounds good but surely needs some maintenance after 45 years!, the fuel gauge has sprung to life complete with the red low fuel level lamp...nice and by pulling fuse no 12 we can stop the fuel pump chewing itself up. We still have various warning lights not working but they will be connected up when the engine is back in, however there are still several wires loose under the bonnet and the make shift head lamp switch and no main beam. Now we have a wiring diagram thanks to DaveG albeit for the 2.8 version that has a different main beam changeover switch we can see what needs doing to get the ignition up and running. I also can't work out if the big electric screenwash pump is original or a later modification as there does not appear to be a switch on the dash for it....

Starter back together and working but there was a lot of wear on the front and back bushes so it is not a keeper...gave it a good test and it got slightly warm so should be OK to start the reconned engine when it is back in the car.

Fuel pump next...it is electric so a new one on me. Will try the tank filter first...I can't see a filter under the bonnet perhaps it is in with all the bits that came with the car?
