Shock absorbers
« on: 26 April, 2022, 01:59:29 PM »

I have a dilemma. I have no reason to think that the shock absorbers on my Fulvia s3 are anything other than the original ones. They certainly look old and the gaiters are perished. That said, they seem to work perfectly well and they don’t seem to have any obvious signs that they’re not doing their job properly.

Common sense however tells me that ancient shock absorbers cannot be working anywhere near their best, so I’m considering buying a new set. Is my logic is flawed?

Any thoughts appreciated. Thanks.

Somewhat provocatively if it aint broke dont fix it. If you decide to replace then Fulvias really seem to work best in street mode with DeCarbons which you cannot really get anymore (save from vivalancia.com who make a unit with the decarbon design.
Its not the winning but taking part! or is it taking apart?

Okay thank you. Although I am a believer in that motto I guess I’m always after an excuse to tinker with something or buy a nice new component!

I think the original deCarbons can be restored.
(At least the ones in the Flaminia could be restored)

Thanks that’s a good idea. I’ll see what Omicron says but it could present some logistical problems. I don’t think working on the units sounds like a job I could undertake.

To be honest I have never heard that Fulvia deCarbons could be/ were ever restored ??

My local shock absorber workshop was a bit sceptical when I asked them to restore the Flaminia ones.
They were a bit afraid of availability of mainly gaskets, turned out they could use Koni gaskets.

I've always used Koni classics on Fulvia's , not harsh like spax , very similar to decarbon when set about half way
When it comes to Lancias, mine are State Of The Ark!

Yes, Omicron use Koni. I was going to buy some relatively inexpensive ones from Historic Racing in Germany.  Looks like I might have to raid the piggy bank now though 😥

AVO UK based in Northampton sell dampers( shock Absorbers ) for Fulvias I believe. Worth a phone call. We use them on race cars and they work very well, and are adjustable. Tel. 01604 708101.
I have no connection to them other than as a customer.
