Tippers supplied a pressed aluminium silver on black front plate (UK motorbike plate) for me, which fits the Italian front number plate holder, if that is the car's original place of registration I understand you can still us that size plate in the UK and therefore it is legal, I assume you can do the same for the rear plate.   Ensure you have the v5 document first to avoid any legal issues (£10,000 fine per plate made by number plate makers who do not register your V5).                        Does anyone here know if UK ANPR cameras recognise non standard plates? Richard
I know mine are detected on the Dartford Crossing - so by inference must be legal! Actually my MOT man said its all about legibility. If they can be read from a prescribed distance they are legal. The issue I have with folk who have silver on black plates when their vehicles are not 40plus years old....

Reminds me of the recent story where someone got a bus lane fine but when they appealed found the ANPR camera had accidentally picked up what it took for a registration but was actually a logo on some random pedestrian's clothes, who just happened to be crossing the road. Impressive technology to even attempt to interpret an image into a number plate.

My front number plate is attached with 2 large self adhesive heavy duty Velcro strips .  This has the added advantage that should I get stopped , I have a UK sized one in the boot ready to swap
