I have recently imported a modified 1967 Fulvia coupe that needs to be road registered but it is bumperless.

Any suggestions re number plate mountings and setup/positioning for front and exact dimensions for rear? (The car is not with me but at import agents at moment).

Assume it has Italian plate surrounds? If so Tippers can make plates to fit with smaller (but still legal) letters/numbers

Tippers supplied a pressed aluminium silver on black front plate (UK motorbike plate) for me, which fits the Italian front number plate holder, if that is the car's original place of registration I understand you can still us that size plate in the UK and therefore it is legal, I assume you can do the same for the rear plate.   Ensure you have the v5 document first to avoid any legal issues (£10,000 fine per plate made by number plate makers who do not register your V5).

You need to buy this if you don't have it: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/223964597596

The smaller font is VERY imortant as per the picture attached of mine...
Tippers are very good.

For the front you'll need a holder for the small italian size number plate

enjoy!

Insofar as I am aware, you can drive on the Italian plates (having told you rinsurance company!) until you register the car in the UK.   Whe I imported my Lambda from Oz I drove it on the Aussie plates for nearly a year!

When I had my rear plate made up with Tippers I sent off the surround to them to make sure that the plates would fit properly. They did a perfect job. I had the shiny finish characters which I think look pretty good.

Jai, I've had many compliments over the years of having the right number plate frame!
Many years of happy ownership.
Sadly selling the fulvia this year but the new owner will be grateful too :-)

Surely the nub of the problem is that without the front bumper there is nowhere to fit the normal (i.e. original Italian) registration plate surround. I’ve just had a quick look on Google at photos of Fanalones and most had no front number plate..but a couple had the number plate mounted on bar also used for the spotlights/driving lamps whilst one or two had the number plate surround fitted on the valance presumably using a bespoke bracket. I guess a third option is a stick on number plate on the bonnet like an E-Type but that wouldn’t look good.
Incidentally I looked into the subject of driving a car in the UK ON Italian plates when I was driving my second GTE home back in 2017. The law is quite clear. If you own the car and you are a UK resident you are not allowed to drive it on public roads in the UK, and with that being the case the insurance that I had taken out for the journey home across mainland Europe did not cover use on UK roads until I had registered the car in the UK. In the event I fudged the problem by convincing the supplying dealer not to deregister the car in Italy until I had arrived home and I carried a letter from them stating I had their permission to drive it…of course I had already paid for it in full. It was still illegal if course as I am a UK resident and the car was uninsured for the journey from the channel tunnel but hey ho…
