Cylinder head dowel bolts
« on: 19 July, 2021, 12:24:30 PM »
Does anyone know a source for the dowel bolts needed for fitting a cylinder head correctly - having got mine sorted-ish I am now aware of another issue for which I will be taking the head off again. The original bolts did not include the dowel bolts, I bought a new set from Pieces-Fulvia in France and they didn't include any. To ensure the head is more correctly fitted next time I would really like to get some but don't know a source. Alternatively if anyone has a paid they can lend to me whilst I fit the head that would be great.

I rang them today and asked but Andrew wasn't there - the person said they'd ask him when he got back but I haven't heard back so I'll email him.

Its hardly a big deal. Your original bolts should have had 2 for #1 & #2 bolt holes. If you are bothered about it you can wind some metal adhesive tape round two bolts near the head to make a dowel effect to position the head and remove them (replaced with 10.9 or greater strength bolts after the head has had all the other bolts fitted and nipped by hand). Then I do 3 stages of torquing to 24ft lb. 10, 18, 24. If the gasket is the grey graphite type - assemble dry. Others will have other opinions!
Its not the winning but taking part! or is it taking apart?

Thanks, my original bolts didn't have any dowel bolts and there weren't any in the replacement set I got. As people seem to have said it is important to use them I thought I should - I'll try the tape if I don't find any.

For what it is worth it is only to align the head initially. when you have all the bolts in you will not find any slop in the position of the head. If they were important they would be in the kit.....or at least a message...
