Reawakening my Flavia PF Coupe after a long hibernation. I have discovered that my horn only works when the steering wheel is in certain positions.

There is a large arc of movement where there is no power supply being transferred to the copper ring part of the steering wheel boss.

From looking at pictures on the interweb, I'm guessing that there is some sort of spring-loaded bush that should make an electrical contact with another copper ring that is mounted into the steering column which is in turn connected to a yellow positive feed wire.

Is this a problem that anyone else has encountered? Does the bush wear out or is it more likely to be dirt on the contact surfaces causing a poor connection?

I had the very same issue with my Flavia Coupe 2000.  To cure it I removed the steering wheel, the central boss and gave the electrical connections, which include apin type connection, a jolly good clean and hey presto it now works fine.  All sorts of grub collects between the steering wheel and the boss.  Make sure that you have the wheels centred before refitting the steering wheel or it will be wonky when you come to use it.

Hope this helps?

I had a horn that sounded occasionally going over bumps and was temperamental so at the same time check the wire going through the column still has insulation.

Check the horn relay, I assume it will be similar to a Fulvia under the wing, mine was temperamental it might need the contacts a check/clean ip

It was the bush that was the problem. Bought a substitute bush from Omicron. It's not the same as the original brass bush and =slops about a bit in t=its seating, but the horn now works so job done!
