Engine Install

Hi,

I am about to re-install my overhauled engine and looking for some tips on installing from above. I found this thread https://www.lancia.myzen.co.uk/forum/index.php?topic=1184.0 which gave a few tips and on the look out for some more.

I appreciate that most will use the raised body sub-frame method but space is limited so it has ot g oin from above.

Any pointers will be welcome.

It is much easier to take out the subframe, by lifting the body off it, install the engine into that and the lower the car back down onto the assembly.     It does not need significantly more head room than lowering in the engine from the top and saves a great deal of fiddling about.   Also gives you the chance really to check up on the subframe and steering etc.

Thank for the feedback. My space issue is longitudinal.

The space within the sub frame where the engine sits seems tight with the spigot shaft. Any tip on that front? Lossening the GB mounts, raising the GB slightly?

It is all a bit of a juggle as you say spigot shaft has to go in to the clutch housing initially at an angle and a trolley jack  under the gearbox (loosening the central mount) can help. I found the fouling was mostly the sump front on the subframe. It generally goes in after a fight if the clutch plate is lined up, and there is no corrosion (rust) on the end of the spigot.

I swapped out a S3 engine to go into my S2 on my ownsome but with a hydraulic engine crane all done from above.

Basically, there are 6 bolts holding the subframe in.    Then disconnect cables etc, most of them already disconnected and take out the gear stick.  That's it!  Assembly will come out sideways, too.   So much easier!  Good luck whichever way you try.

I think you are forgetting the steering box which is a worse pig to put back..... especially with that stupid rubber cover over the splined joint.

Try using a few cable ties around the rubber cover to reduce it to a rubber disc, fit the splined shaft to the box, the cut the cable ties off and it covers the joint as normal, it keeps it out of the way

I installed the engine today from above. Strapped the engine from the intake manifold, loosened all the gearbox bushes, raised the gearbox and pushed it back as far as possible. Pleasantly surprised how easy it went. The fact the engine jack had a load leveller massively simplified the process.
