Back in 2003 when Robin and myself both owned Fulvia 2c Berlina's, I was in Robin's neck of the wood after dropping my Daughter and her Husband off at Gatwick airport, and as previously arranged I called in, I knew about 'Modestine' but this was my first encounter with this lovely Lancia, in retrospect I do wonder if at the time if Robin really knew what he'd let himself ( and Margaret) in for Shocked

I was astonished to see her size and the amount of work to do.
As many will know the body wasn't her original body, and that Robin had hunted far and wide to find a suitable body to cloth her in, but even then needed it needed a lot of work and alteration.
Fast forward to 3 years later in Turin and the 100th Anniversary of Lancia, and it was amazing to see how much they had achieved.
I spoke to Robin the other day who gave me permission to post these photos, these had been taken in 2003 on the understanding that they would stay secret, until Robin chose to show her to everyone.
Ploughing through many Lancia photos the other day I came across them, and this is the first time they have ever been shown to anyone other than Robin and Margaret.

Modestine has been getting progressively more incontinent of late (old and incontinent - you know what I mean!) which coupled with a persistent rattle at tick over has demanded investigation. So, out with the engine and onto the smart new rotating engine stand Jonathan provided. A mere two hour job contrasting mightily with the two day job the first time we did it. There ain't no substitute for experience.

Those who have followed my restoration sagas will know that I love a dead line. July this year this time for the wedding of the previous owners daughter. No pressure there then! Although, if as an over 70 year old Boris confines me to my home for four months it should be a doddle!

John,  20 head studs  Smiley

Simon, Yes, all cast Iron except the sump and that's very heavy. No idea what the head weighs  - I can just about lift it with the rockers removed. Camshaft remains bolted to the block when the head is removed which is useful when changing the head gasket as the timing gear remains undisturbed.

More progress this week, in fact just about down to the bare block.

Lot of gunge in the water jacket.

It isn't possible to remove the flywheel because it won't pass rearwards out of the engine cross member which in turn can't be separated from the engine until crank and flywheel are clear of the block! Took a long time to figure that out the first time I removed the engine from the car. It's also more than I can lift these days hence the use of the hoist.

Nothing untoward discovered yet, everything looks to be in excellent order. So, where's the rattle coming from?

I do need to decide that having got this far whether I go the whole hog and have a rebore and a set of new pistons made. Oh, and the timing chain sprockets are quite badly worn.

But first the the big degrease!
