So, adding up everyone's responses, there is a switch somewhere on the dashboard, which you press when you want a fuel level. Is this what people want?

For what it's worth here is the diagram I made when I fitted my fuel gauge. As you will see, when the sender connects to contact 1 the number one bulb lights on the display. When any other contact is made the display only lights when the button is pressed. The wire colours can be ignored as they are of my chosing as I had to make a new loom.

Thank you Everyone for all the information. I think I now have enough to make the unit. It's just a question of waiting for the parts to arrive.

Geoff - the wiring diagram is really helpful. As you mentioned making a new loom, do you by any chance have a diagram of that too, as I have to make my own in the future, and I don't have a loom to copy?

Dave, if you require any further Aprilia information contact the Club Librarian.
I scanned a whole lot of different articles and factory publications for him to help Aprilia owners.

Dave
The loom was really simple as I didn't try to make it authentic. All Aprilia wiring is hidden and, from the rear, goes down the transmission tunnel. I bought the thinnest cable from Vehicle Wiring Products which is rated at 11 amps so more than good enough. 4 metres of each colour (at about 25p per metre each) and some sleeving. pulled the cables through the sleeving, fitted to the car and trimmed the ends to suit. You might want to check the cable length depending which way you want to run it. As I say simple and not nearly as elegant as your sender.

Alternatively you can buy multicore cable.   I found some 11 core when I rewired mine some 20 years ago.   Now use Ebay, where there are many listed.  It only carries microamps after all.
