Having had my S2 Coupe now for some 18mths I want start addressing gremlins. The main mechanical one is a rattling noise I hear when in 2nd and 3rd gears.....drives fine changes fine buts rattles in those gears even when warm.
Whats the likely cause ?
Gearbox rebuild required and if so suggestions of who to take it to......Based in Leigh On Sea in Essex.

All info appreciated.

Cheers,

Check the bottom of the gearstick, it may be loose in the remote linkage in the rubber boot from under the car.

Will certainly do that.....would be a nice cheap fix if that proves to be the case !

Its either that or the bushes the remote linkage rod runs in. They are nylon sort of and do wear out. Omicron ones actually have to be modified to fit the last time I bought some (some months ago). It would be a challenge to sort without dropping the gearbox out (but then you can look and replace the clutch plate as also probably time expired??). The bottom bolt of the gear stick should have a thin shim washer but these are often lost. You can tighten the bolt up to just allow free movement and then apply the lock nut. The protective boot might need replacing as well.

Its not the winning but taking part! or is it taking apart?

Also check the spring in the attached diagram is there (no.19), interesting the parts book from 1970 doesn't show the shim Tim mentions, which fits in no.12 as the bolt passes through no.29.
