Author Topic: Mystery switch on Aprilia steering column  (Read 3045 times)

I'm rewiring my 1949 Aprilia berlina from scratch.  There were too many different repairs and bodges just to carry out minor repairs, so I took photos and made notes, and then launched an offensive with wire snips.  I missed noting where the wire from one switch went, and I cannot trace it as many cables were made up of different-coloured wires joined along their length.  The switch looks as it it might be a contemporary after-market device.  It's a lever toggle switch of high quality and has one terminal only.  There are two positions, open and closed.  It completes a circuit through the switch body and the steering column, and so it earths some device.  I suspect that it may be a horn switch.  Does anybody recognise it?    There is logo inside:- CB, and a number:- 928. I've attached two images.

I've seen similar before, but used for dipping lights

I rewired my Cabrio from scratch adding a couple of circuits for modern side/brake lights etc (plus an iPhone charger option as well) - very satisfying

There is a chap in Italy making repro woven wiring that is very nice - takes longer to wire because it's all the same colour , but the end result is great

Hi John,
As you've suggested, maybe a horn switch to overcome the delicate original unit that mounts on the steering column? My bakelite unit has already already been repaired.......!!
Is the stalk switch spring-loaded?

Hi Tim,
The switch is not spring-loaded, so I suppose that makes it easier to give long blasts of the horn to annoy other motorists!

Quite possibly an aftermarket item which the factory adopted with the Ardea, who's horn button can be turned about 30 degrees to lock it on, saves so much effort!

Similar mounting to the'Bloster' steering blockers for Fulvia and Flavia, and certainly looks aftermarket fit to me.

I've concluded that it is a dip switch.  It earths the coil in the headlamp changeover switch.
