Hello,
I suspect the tube that the steering box attaches to, has been replaced with a with a slightly fatter tube, as I have difficulty fitting the steering box to the tube. My tube is 36 / 35,8 mm in diameter. Can anybody confirm this diameter?
Thank you!
Torstein

Diameter confirmed!
Does the steering box usually need a lit of force to fit over the tube?

I would have said the tube diameter should be 35mm by the way Torstein. This is from measuring a complete rebuilt steering box and clamp on the bench. There should be no force necessary to place it in the correct position as neither the steering box or the steering box clamp is a complete semi circle. Has there been metalwork in this area? The metal under the tube is often very corroded needing replacing and the shape and position of the aperture relative to the cross tube for mounting the steering box is quite critical. Chris

I removed some undercoating etc and got 35,3mm so you are right Chris, 35 is the correct number.
Is this the correct steering box?

Is there no 'lancia' identification plate on the upper side of the box? I have never seen one with cross headed screws before. Chris

another marking, on the bracket. Something that looks like a logo, a circled "T" then: " C.10 - 60023"

That makes sense, and would explain the fitment issues. The box seemed too small for the tube, and I would guess the crossmember tube on an Appia is of a smaller dimension than on the Aurelia

Google confirms, it is indeed an Appia steering box. Good thinking Ade!
