Good afternoon all,
Two questions:
1. Where to buy new windscreen wipers? - mine are rotten 2. How test electric thermostatic fan? - This doesn't seem to want to boot up.
As always any advice is very appreciated.
Mark

I wrote in about 1982 in LMC journal of fan problem on my 2000 saloon. Car overheated in traffic and when tested cold everything worked. It was all was down to a broken in-line fuse holder. When hot the weight of the softer cable pulled the contact from the fuse itself. Maybe worth a look. I ended up with blown head gasket and water pump problems until sorted.

For the electric fan first short across the thermoswitch to test if that has failed. Then I am afraid its out with a volt meter and circuit diagram to start checking that 12v is at the relay and fuse. Be careful to guard you are not near the fan if it comes on unexpectedly.
Re wiper blades, what is so special? Ebay is a useful source.

I drove to London for a meeting and boiled in the East End. After a day parked I tested the fan by direct feed from battery and it worked. Going home I staggered to Harry Manning (as one did in those days) and there the fan was not working and the wire was visibly drooping. A bit of insulating tape holding the fuse holder together was a bit of a give-away too. Final sentence of article was to say that spending 40p on a new fuse holder would have saved hundreds of pounds in engine damage repair.

Thanks for you advice - I'll have a crack at trying to find the fault, voltmeter in hand, later today. Mark

I have tested the fan by simply applying a live wire to the live input. Can you tell me where the fan thermostat is located? Mark

I have this sorted now - just one last question - can anyone tell me the size of the fuse required?
With thanks to everyone who gave advice.

Just one last thing - whilst investigating the problem i noticed that the solenoid cover is missing with just some tape over the unit. Does anyone know where I might get hold of a replacement unit?
With thanks.

If you go to the radiator switch and short out between terminals with ignition on, fan should start up. If not, further investigation. Mine tended to blow inline fuse and general relay and fuseholder was dodgy. Rewired and new relay sorted it and also wired in manual override, spare switch on centre console, as these engines heat up quickly

The 2000 Coupe I've recently purchased has a toggle switch with aluminium bracketry neatly installed under the dashboard which shorts current to the fan to allow manual selection to ON. A nice touch for what I've been told is a poorly equipped cooling system through often heating too higher temperatures before switching to ON.
