Rust , What Rust !! I don't See any rust !!!

« on: 08 May, 2019, 08:41:37 AM »

My Fulvia has developed a miss fire  below 2000 rpm , it seems to run rough until it gets over 2000rpm , I've checked the leads ,they seem to be ok , I replaced them 3 years ago , would it be a plug fouling of a carb problem  ?  Huh? Thanks David

Could it be to do with the idle jets?

Hello Dave

Could be a few things but worth changing the plugs to Iridium type first.

I presume the idle jets if they are blocked  would cause the misfire  ? It runs like a tractor  up to 2000 rpm . Can the jets be blown ou the with air ?
I'll check as the the plugs  first. The weather  was bad yesterday  evening  and I didn't get a  chance  to look at it . Thanks for the advice.

The idle/slow running jets and also the main emulsion tubes (2 of each per carb) are accessible from the top of the carb. Best take the whole top off so you can see if you have a lot of crap in the float chamber. If it looks like you have best to take the carbs off and strip them and blow everything through with an air line......

I have used carburettor cleaning solvent for the jets, to clear them of petrol deposits. A small ultrasonic cleaning tank is also useful. To find out which cylinders are not firing properly perhaps remove one HT lead at a time and see if the idle speed alters. Or wind the idle speed screws in and out to see what effect those have (mark original position first). If any of these things have no effect, that could be where a problem lies. A temperature meter could be used on the exhaust manifold branches (cooler=not working so well) Better weather now I hope.

Another thing to check are the screws holding the venturis. You can check by removing the air filter box and trumpets and then see if you can wiggle the venturies with your finger - if you can move them then tighten the screw and lock nuts on the side of each choke tibe

I tried this Wurth stuff on a car that had been standing some while that would not run cleanly low down. Cured it.

This snake oil can do 3 Fulvias....

I got the chance to have a go at the Fulvia today and it's sorted . I took out the idler jets and there was a bit of black gunk on them I gave them a clean , one at a time . I sprayed some carb cleaner in the hole and blew compressed air through them . screwed them back to their original place ,This cured the problem .  Thanks for the advice  Smiley
