All,
A month or so ago I removed the instrument binnacle from my Coupe as the speedo had stopped working. I have now got a replacement from Italy, and began installing it today. However, when I connected all the wires and bulb holders etc, and then tested it all, I found that nothing worked. I removed the binnacle, and tried the horn, lights etc, and nothing works !
I put the battery on charge and then put a wire and bulb across the terminals and it lit up fine, but when I put it back in the car - nothing !
The fuses beneath the dashboard are all okay.
Any ideas ?
Thanks,
Bob

Bob As Brian & Richard said, check the earth lead connection to the chassis is tight and not corroded. Maybe undo it , clean and grease it and refit. Also check the other end of the Live cable where ever it`s bolted to, starter solenoid or the starter motor itself. It may have come loose or broken off. Might be worth checking the engine to chassis earth cable as well.

Chaps,
Sorry for the slow reply, I managed to sort it out after all.
There are three thick red cables and one thick black cable that are attached to the rear of the ammeter by a couple of small nuts, and these have to be connected to provide the electrical power (I guess they must complete some circuit).
Anyway, the upshot is that after a bit of fiddling about connecting up all of the warning lights etc, I now have an instrument panel that all works with fully functioning gauges. The only exception is the speedometer (The original problem), as the weather has not been nice enough to get the car out, but hopefully I will do so this weekend (Fingers crossed).
Hopefully it will function correctly, and I can look forward to many miles this Spring/Summer.
Thanks for your advice.

The speedo is a work of art inside!!! Mine was sooo underreading that I took it out and delved in. A spider had made its home there sometime during the cars long storage. Anyway cleaning carefully and relubing made it work just right. Sorry I did not take any photos.

Having all the power going through an ammeter was a thing in the 60s. I had the same on a Vauxhall. A dodgy alternator burned the ammeter out. It was interesting suddenly having no power in the outside lane of a contraflow with no hard shoulder. No engine, no indicators, just a dead car coasting in heavy traffic! I survived.
