Appia S1 - 2006 Turin centenary Car of the Century

WWW
« on: 25 May, 2011, 05:23:40 AM »

I have got the Appia Consortium Furgoncino for a couple of weeks at the moment - Will How brought it down and we took it to Wiscombe VSCC (where it was much appreciated by the people there), and now we are doing a bit of welding to it and fitting some new tyres kindly supplied at cost price by Minera Tyres & Exhausts (thanks Chugga!).

Anyway, while it was here I couldn't resist taking a few pix of it with my own one. Mine still needs finishing, but it is further on than it looks in the photos (engine is finished and all bodywork is done except the final rub-down and respray). Trouble is, we have so much work to do that it has been in this state for 2 years - and probably will be for another 2! But one day there will be two Furgoncini actually on the road in the U.K!

But for the time being here is a picture that you couldn't take anywhere else in the world (as far as I know!). You certainly couldn't take it west of the Netherlands or east of New York!

Cheers

Alan

As Brian points out, I was talking about vans (Furgoncini), not pickups (Camioncini).

And as I also pointed out, the pickup lives in the Netherlands...

Cheers

Ian, in response to your question ......

The following is a direct quote from the Appia Consortium 2010 Newsletter and is included as part of an article entitled 'Appia Furgoncino and variants'.

"One aspect which Wim has cleared up for me is the Red Stripe across the front radiator grille or front wing. For a long time Italian legislation stipulated that commercial vehicles should be differentiated from passenger cars. If a commercial vehicle is run and operated by a company transporting its own goods it must have a red stripe on the front and rear of the vehicle. Professional transport companies and others must have a white stripe on the front and rear. But the legislation never stipulated the size or position of the stripe, but approximately a 6cms wide diagonal stripe was common but more recently the stripe has been painted on the front and rear bumpers."

So now  we know !!!!!
