Title: BA9S LED bulb replacements for instrument lights
Post by: Angle Grinder on 21 November, 2017, 06:30:51 PM
Has anyone tried replacing their old filament dashboard lights with modern LED alternatives. The problem I am having is finding an LED bulb that will fit into the brass tubes that hold them in place behind the instruments. I tried one variant and, whilst it fitted into the tube, it was too long (~35mm) to be inserted behind the dials. There are some shorter (25 ~ 30 mm long) LED bulb variants, but they look to be too wide to insert into the brass tubes.

Has anyone found a workable solution to let them see their oil pressure when night time driving?

Can you dim LED bulbs?

Dimming - I assume yes as LEDs in new build do so.

There are dimmable LED bulbs of the BA9s type, I recently bought some equivalent festoon bulbs for the interior and boot for my Fulvia from these people who were exhibiting at the NEC a few weeks ago, much whiter and brighter light than the originals.  They have also supplied other members with various LED bulbs from Augusta to Flaminia.

I am being lazy here Neil for which I apologise in advance......but ref the festoon bulbs you fitted what length does your Fulvia use? And do you happen to know the length of the festoon bulb which sits above the fuse box in a S1 sedan?
I presume the LED bulbs run cooler and this would be beneficial because over time the fusebox cover distorts with the heat.
Finally which version of the BA9S bulbs did you fit?
Thanks in advance.

Chris,
I'm Confused, which bulb are you referring to?  As I don't have a festoon bulb above my fuse box?

I bought 38mm festoon bulbs for the interior light, is the festoon refer to similar to the thin green one you find in S2 coupe in the fuse box area?  I haven't investigated the fuse box light as yet.

They do run much cooler very little heat approximately 1W against 5W for the original with a bright white light, they do cost more than a standard bulb, but they last a lot longer and reduce the power requirements too.

I haven't fitted BA9s bulbs, but I did remember this supplier had dimmable bulbs available, hopefully suitable for a Flavia.

Yes it's like the S2 green festooned bulb. Maybe this is one of the things that was phased in between S1 & S2?
Thanks for the info Neil. I will give them a try I think.

See photo of the replacement LED bulb which is approximately 40 mm a tight fit , the original is 38 mm/5W and the Fulvia S2 fuse box green slim bulb is also 38 mm, but only 3W from the faint indentation on the cap.

For the fuse box green festoon search for trafficator festoon 3 w and go and buy some green nail varnish..... some say 38mm long and others 36mm long but all are 6mm wide. Anything wider may a problem. Trust Lancia to use a 1930's bulb in a 1970's car... buy now before world wide stocks are exhausted!!
