I am sure that there are members out there who have bought a car on the continent and have had the confidence to drive it home to dear old Blighty
Questions arise as to how to:

• getting temporary number plates
  
• insurance
  
• brake down cover
  
  I know many of you know your cars inside out but for those of us who want the assurance of getting home with their new baby which is an unknown quantity with a degree of confidence these questions do arise. So can anyone help with my questions? :)

Colin, where on continent is said Lancia, different rules apply in each country.

Also you can get breakdown cover for the person not the car so no matter what you are driving youre covered, ADAC,   a German company might be your best bet.

Insurance is always awkward, not entirely sure the issue has been satisfactorily dealt with over the years despite several threads on the forum.

The car is coming from Switzerland.

The garage has told me they can organise number plates for me, which includes 3rd party insurance.

So I now I need the confidence of a breakdown company for the journey home.

Footman James have offered some comp. insurance but I must check their conditions.

Don't forget if you are importing a car from Switzerland that you will have to pay import duties and VAT.

As far as I have been able to ascertain, the Swiss VAT at 8% will not have to be paid, but I believe UK 5% VAT import will then imposed onto this now reduced "selling price". This 5% figure I believe is applicable to all imports for vehicles over 30 years old.

Import duty  - I am not aware of this on cars over 30 years of age.

Any further insights most welcome.

When I imported my new Y elefantino Rosso from Rotterdam  the dealers arranged the temporary plates which I think cost £75, and i still have them as they were only transit plates, I also had to specify the route I was taking to Calais.
As far as insurance was concerned I trawled through specialist left hand drive insurers.
Whether or not any of the above is still relevant i'm not sure as it was 18 years ago.

You are probably better off getting a transport company to bring it back home. Depending were you are it can cost less than £500.00

I personally imported a Thesis back in 2012 from Turin & chose to drive it home. Getting temporary plates & documentation for the car was easy, the part giving me most grief was the insurance, despite every which way I went I came to dead end until my employers put it on their International insurance to allow me to drive it home. (There is a big thread in the Thesis section from the time).

In 2015 when I imported my Fulvia Sport from Germany, I arranged with the dealer to sort out a transporter for me. He arranged with a German company to bring it over to Lancashire along with a Maserati Sebring and it cost around £500 for the privilege. The transporter was then collecting a Bugatti Veyron from Bradford and a Diablo from Essex for the return trip to Europe.

Unless you desperately require to drive your pride & joy back to Blighty then I would personally look at alternatives.

There shouldn't be import duty on a Lancia, as it will have been made in the EU. Wasn't aware of the reduced VAT rate for old cars.
