is that statement true, i.e. it cannot be insured because of the brand?  I would have thought it was more that it was not reregistered on UK plates or is more complicated than that?

My Feelings Peter,
I know it can be a bit difficult after importing my Elefantino in 1999, but the main thing I needed was the Certificat of Conformity ( C of C)
Not sure how things are now as I think they've been tightened up, but as the car is 17 years olsd I wonder how difficult it would be, I've emailed him and asked does he have the C of C and that I could be interested. It's in Oxfordshire but depending which part of Oxfordshire, I might go and have a look, as I still miss my Y.

The car has been here for over 18 months as it has passed two MOTs and the current one does not expire until May '17. Also Lucrezia has been posting on Gumtree for 3 years!!

Brian, location is given as Oxford, Oxfordshire so not the worst scenario!!! Go on, have a look and good luck!!

Hi Andy

You are assuming UK MOT and that the seller has not just used MOT as the UK equivalent for example the French equivalent (Controle Technique?).

Not sure how you go for an MOT here without it being registered as all now done online. Also begs the question how they could use the car here for prolonged time, is that possible with mainland insurance as it is for many of the mainland countries, i.e. if you insure in Holland, you are/can be insured for driving in France for prolonged periods I think, unlike here where the insurance tends to be for 30 consecutive days or similar only. I may of course misunderstood my Dutch neighbour in France on this.

I'm buying it! I have agreed with Lucrezia that she will deliver it when she returns from abroad. I will report further when it arrives next month. Happy New Year to all.
Regards, John

Hi John

Well done, I did not think it would be around for too long at that price...

John, you've beaten me to it, last I heard from Lucrezia was that she's in Canada until the 20th of January and I could view it when she came back.
Certainly looked a good buy, you obviously had the advantage of it being close enough to go and have a look.
Hope you enjoy it, I certainly did when I had mine.

So I'm now the owner of the 2001, 1.2 litre Ypsilon, which Lucrezia kindly delivered last week. Harry would have been proud of me! She even brought me a bunch of Tulips! All for £390.00, as it needed a new battery and "attention" to its starter motor. I need a couple of decent wheel trims and another wheel bolt if anyone has any spare parts. It's registered in Belgium, so I hope I'll be able to get that put right quickly. I'm looking forward to driving it.
 Regards, John

The adventure begins.
and ends pretty quickly! I have found it impossibly expensive to insure it in the U.K. Adrian Flux was the only broker who got me a quote, and that was based on a value of £600, with an excess of £500, limited mileage, third party, fire and theft. The premium was going to be £1,000!
So if anyone is still interested, it's up for sale. Please form an orderly queue!
Regards, John

John, have you tried it on a multi-car or multi-classic car policy?

Yes, but nobody wants to insure it. I was unable to add it to my modern (Yeti) policy or to the policy I have the Lambda and Augusta on. They all say that they don't insure such cars! I have owned many Left hand drive cars and imported quite a few, including Flaminias, one of which was worth a lot. I never had trouble getting insurance. Most of the brokers I asked found that the insurance companies didn't regard the Ypsilon as a "classic", as in most cases it wasn't old enough. Shame, as I was quite looking forward to driving it.

I phoned my current classic insurance company who told me it would qualify as a classic in N Ireland when over 15 yrs old ( would cost another £50 to add to my group policy) but in GB it has to be over 20! Explanations as to why the 5yr difference welcome!!

Assume the £1k quote was as your main vehicle?

P Not at all. I made it clear that I have three other cars and that I just wanted to use it locally, for shopping, etc.

I see,  a full premium then, your NCB used on your main car.

Hope Peter's suggestion can help.
