At first glance it looks a bit like a 1:43 white metan kit but when you read the description it is actually almost 16 inches long. How did these work then? On the end of a cable, or did they just run round in circles?

They ran in a circle and I presume the goal was to do the fastest circuits. I think they were popular up to the 1950s when slot car racing really took over.
