Title: Book recommendation: Legendary Italian Cars
Post by: nthomas1 on 22 January, 2016, 02:06:02 PM
Just thought I’d bring to your attention a book I bought today.  The title is “Legendary Italian Cars”, by Enzo Rizzo, foreword by Georgette Giugiaro.  I saw it a week ago in the Liverpool branch of “The Works” bookshop labelled at £10.  The back cover shows a price of £25.  I was in a hurry so didn’t buy one, but I had more time today and stopped by and bought one.  Although the discount label on the cover still showed £10, I was only charged £5 at the till. It is hard-back, with 312 pages.  I hadn’t come across this book before.

“The Works” stores are in many towns and cities in the UK.  I always stop and look at their transportation section (as well as their travel and art/design sections) - and usually find little of interest, but persistence is worthwhile as over the years I’ve bought some real bargains at way below normal price:   “Pininfarina 1930-2000” by Prunet for £10, “Motorsport Routes” for £5,  “Into the Red”  by Nick Mason for £4, amongst others.  As a Lancia and Alfa Romeo enthusiast (yes, I believe it’s possible to be both at the same time!) I was delighted with the book.  At first I expected it to be the usual coffee table collection of pictures but it is much more than that.  It chronicles the development of the auto industry in Italy through to 2015.  It has some great pictures that I haven’t seen before - my favourite is a colour (or maybe tinted black and white) picture of workers soldering panels in the Ansaldo factory during WW1.

Below I’ve shown a few examples of pages relevant to us Lancisti.  I would encourage you to look out for it.  I just checked the “The Works” web site and the book shows there at £10.

I didn't realise that PDF files would not show on screen.  So here are the jpeg images (hopefully!)

And at "The Works" on-line at £10 with £2.99 postage which is still great value if you aren't near one of their shops.

Beautiful book.

Those workers in the Ansaldo factory are interesting. I would not say they are soldering, which is joining metal using a different low melting point metal as effectively a glue, but welding, which is melting the material the parts are themselves made of together with a filler wire of the same or similar metal. BUT...the workers seem to be using oxy-acetelyne torches but the work is producing a shower of sparks consistent with electric arc welding. What do others who have the book think?

I haven't seen the book or the photo in question, but old-time gas welding can produce lots of sparkling lights!

Certainly the best value book at £5.00! That photo is a bit mysterious, as colour photography wasn't that good in those days. I suspect a bit of tinting has been going on, but I have no idea what they're meant to be doing.

Frank - your post shows just why I enjoy the forum so much.  The book said they were soldering so I accepted that. With your knowledge you've challenged that and I'll be very interested to hear what other forum members think. To be honest, and with my limited technical expertise, if the photograph had been of people eating noodles with a pair of chopstix and the caption had said they were soldering the noodles I would probably have believed it!

Unbelievable that the book is marked up in the shop as £10 (which is a bargain price) then they charge you £5 at the till!

Some errors though, like the late Flavia saloon described as a Fulvia on page 190.

It's a shame that neither the Beta Coupe, HPE or Gamma didn't get a photo, though there is a picture of a Trevi! The big picture of the late Thema is good too, ditto the New Delta.

Brilliant read and absolute bargain.

Just bought the last two in my local shop, one for me and one for my 12 year old nephew's birthday (never too young for a book like this).

Small world; I found out recently his step-uncle was a member of the LMC back in the 80s (ish) anyone remember Eric Thompson ? Staffordshire / South Manchester area.

Martin.

Brian, I went to two local branches it was not stocked, but the helpful assistant suggested I order on line to be delivered to my local branch, then collect when I want at no extra charge, it arrived in 2 days for £10, seemed good value.

I think you should get two for that! Why not take it up with them?

Such a shame there are such glaring typographical errors in this book. And I don't like seeing photos of non standard examples of models which purport to be as they were when new. It's lazy composition and editing.
I know it's not expensive but to be honest it offends me as it is there for posterity.
Grumpy old Chris
