Title: Changing outer CV boot, question.
Post by: Caracad on 06 November, 2015, 06:35:11 PM
Does one have to remove drive shaft from the hub to fit a new outer CV boot?
It looks like it should be possible to remove the inner joint and slide the boot off the shaft. Anyone done it this way?

Just hoping to avoid undoing the hub nut.

If it's the same as the Beta it can be done in situ but it's a messy job and the chances of keeping everything dirt free are remote. When replacing CV boots I've always removed the whole shaft, dismantled the joints completely to check the races before reassembly with fresh grease and new boots/straps.

Remove the shaft. The club hires out the hub nut tool. (PM me or email me in back of VL if you need the tool).

There are different tools depending on model, and depending whether they have ever been taken apart they can be on very tight.

Thanks Tim,
I'll contact you when I get around to changing it.

Do you know if I need to buy a specific Fulvia boot, or is there anything more modern that will fit?

I have used Austin Maxi ones that are a good match in size, but the supplied clips were too large on the outer end as they would foul the hub, had to find alternatives.

I just buy the original boot types and large clip from Omicron although my MOT man gave me some really good metal clips that you can make "low profile"

There are split boots available these days that wrap round and superglue together. I'm not sure I would fancy such a new fangled idea myself though. I always think a bit of blood from skinned knuckles is an essential part of a really satisfying job.

I fitted the 'stretchy' type boots to my Beta. They either come with, or you can buy, a plastic cone that guides them over the hub. They were highly recommended and have been good so far (18 months).
