Dutch film about a Lancia Flaminia Berlina Series 1. It's a bit like "Countach" which is what people exclaimed on seeing the prototype Lambourghini. Different in so many ways, yes... in terms of the mechanicals the beautiful wishbone front suspension being the real revolution, but it is true that this early Flaminia has drum brakes (possibly the same as a late Aurelia, someone here will know) when all later ones had disks. Fessia liked the Aurelia V6 but redesigned and re-dimensioned it. The Aurelia engine was long stroke whereas the first series Flaminia's has a bore of 80 mm and stroke of 81.5 mm making it almost "square". the crank shaft and other parts were also re-designed.
Although Pininfarina's Floride concept cars were built on Aurelia platforms the Flaminia had a new frame with a much longer wheelbase. Production began in 1957 with the series 1 having drum brakes all round but a year later vacuum operated power assisted disc brakes were fitted for the series 2. At the rear Catalogue Raisonne says that the Flaminia introduced a split casting for the gearbox and final drive with the two halves bolted together along the centre line. However in researching pictures I found that ClassicLancia.com in Holland show a gearbox for a B20 which appears exactly the same as the Flaminia. Interesting. |
