Title: Colour matching paint - who/where has a scanner?
Post by: DavidLaver on 16 March, 2015, 02:41:24 PM
Anyone recommend somewhere that I could take a part to for scanning to get a paint code?

I'm in Lewisham so while "London" is obvious it's as easy to get out to Kent, SE Essex, almost anywhere all the way round the "M25" corridor.  Even places a long way away I might be able to "drop in when passing" and that passing might be motivated by the paint scan as much as the museum or event.

Its a question that comes up fairly often, perhaps build a national list?

I'm inspired to ask by the recommendation in the Fulvia Wheel Colour thread.

I would always caution scanning in not a flat paint (even these can be problematic, especially red). I had a recent experience with silver. My body shop said no worries they would colour match through their sophisticated paint mixing and scanner set up. First go was way off, second go wasn't anywhere better. I then said why not use the paint code. Spot on!!!

the scanners are programed with popular paint codes only not all , when it scans it finds the "nearest" match , example of this was my augusta , the DuPont scanner showed nearest match VW something or other , gives mixing code for standard shade and tinted to match shade , as Tim rightly says they are not always accurate , best scanned off a flat surface , also a flatted and polished finish tends to send the machine off at a tangent too , best bet if scanning for a full repaint is pick the nearest match in a modern colour
