Title: Fulvia Berlina GTE on ebay
Post by: blueboxer on 03 February, 2014, 06:01:15 PM
Fulvia Berlina GTE just appeared on ebay - ABW292G. I've seen it before but not sure where. Maybe it's someone on here?

From memory (as the link to the CCFS advert does not work fully) I think this is the one I recommended being bought by a film company!! And as far as I remember it was in Oxford and they bought it around late September. Maybe some one (Brian?) can confirm this is the Oxford car?

However, no mention of it in a film in the current advert....

No reserve eh? Worth a look to see what condition the body is in. Great cars to drive daily.

Looks a bit pricey, body work is so costly, what does a good one go for?

Looks to be in a similar state to Lee Proudfoot's former car, and that needed major work. I think there is a thread on here about its restoration which has gone quiet of late?

Tim,
I think this is  ex Ewen Baird car from Oxford but I can't find a photo at present although I have the chassis number, this one is worth having whereas the white one is a money pit, although the owner has been honest about what he thinks needs doing, as Neil states this is very much in the condition of OPD 37E that Alan Murphy is restoring, and I'd lay money that once spmeone starts work on it they will find it's a lot worse. I also don't like the look of the staining on the offside rr inner wheel arch, that indicates a hole in the boot drain channel or the rear window glass aperture, no doubt Bill can make the panels, but putting it right is going to be a lot of expensive work, particularily if the purchaser can't do the work themselves, my own feeling is it isn't worth the asking price.

The only RHD GTE on the road that I am aware of is Chris Gawne's lovely ex Swiss car, there are no others on the LMC Register as on the road in the UK and if I remember correctly there were only 2 in the 2001 list, both of which had been off the road for many years, they are readily available in mainland Europe and I think you could pick up a good one about 5K, which is a lot less than I reckon it would cost to restore this one.
Classic example of buy the best one you can afford!

You really do need to look very very carefully at the sills, rear sub frame mounts, front and rear wheel arches, the base of the A & B posts and also the rear suspension points before making an offer. Lots of complex double skin sections and the original door shuts on the Berlinas are so tight that repairs need to be well executed. A very strong case for a optic fibre camera partic in the sills I would say. They can be time consuming and very expensive to restore body-wise. Mechanical spares on the other hand are plentiful and reasonably priced.
The GTE is a really nice overall package with the extra power, floor change etc and there are always reasonable examples available in N Italy which don't have the (inevitable) corrosion which exists in most UK Fulvias. But of course they have sun damage to the interior and all the usual knocks, dents and mechanical issues of a 45 years old car.
No wish to be pessimistic or cynical - just realistic. As Brian says, buy the best you can afford.
There was a beautiful as new Verde Ostende 5,000 km GTE sold last year in NW Italy for I think around €13,000.

At least I didn't need a fibre optic camera to look into box sections.  Plenty of natural light and a choice of peep holes aside from the "open plan" nature of much of it.  It was also an advantage to be able to inspect the spring hanger with it being so helpfully relocated inside the boot.  However I understand about door shuts - my passenger one is yet to open.

The trouble is I've yet to apply the "worse than it looks" rule.  Cracks in the top of a screen pillar are the first indication of hidden challenges.

I'd say the blue one looks a good buy at the opening bid of £1800 and I notice someone has now had a bid on it.
The white one will probably be quite a lot worse than it's scruffy condition implies.
I'm a bit of a spares hoarder and despite my 65 2C being pretty much perfect, I still keep a constant look out in Italy for spares. I have seen old doors  and occasionally the odd panel for sale but that's pretty much about it on the bodywork side of things, so do agree with Chris & Brian on the practicalities of restoration of the white one at the current price offered. If it was a few hundred £'s then as a DIY project, it might be some fun but ultimately not economically viable. If it was RHD then maybe it would be a different matter.

I do hope someone does rescue the white one. Would hate to think of it being broken for spares as seller does make a valid point about it's value in bits. Hopefully someone will strike a deal with the seller and take it on as a project.
