Title: 1300 Deltas and unleaded
Post by: fensaddler on 10 April, 2007, 10:06:33 PM
Please see my questions on the thread below, in members information relating to Nick Haigh's VL article this month.  Relevant chunk also posted for non-members to read.

However, what did get me thinking was your comment about 1300s on unleaded.  According to your article, post 431170 chassis no on the 1300 is OK on unleaded - unfortunately mines an 88 (August, on the F plate), with a chassis number 416xxx - which rather suggests I need to do something other than run unleaded.

So, all of you out there, I need some advice, as follows:

1.  Can you confirm that it is only post 431170 1300s which are unleaded safe (I had been assured mine was) - I've no reason to doubt Nick, he knows his stuff, but I'd like to be doubly sure   ?

2.  If this is so, what should I be doing (only perhaps 1000 miles a year, but much of it on motorway getting to and from events, and hell, you can't but rev them...) - I've been using super unleaded routinely, but am I still risking valve seat recession?  In which case an additive like valvemaster would seem appropriate?

3.  If I do need to protect my valves, the cost of work on the head to fit hardened seats will be quite significant on top of the £2k bill I'm already currently expecting for ongoing work.  Its likely to be much easier and cheaper to source a head from another, later car - but will it fit straight on?

Hi Chris

Bit slow but I've just noticed the response to my Delta article in VL! I've posted some stuff at the original location - hope it helps...?

Cheers

Nick

Chris,
if you not sure, have a chat to Guy Croft or visit his forum (Guycroftraceengines) there's lots of info
there.
I have to be honest I run my Gamma on normal unleaded - no additives and a 1978 motor and as yet
9000 miles and no problems and as you probably know I don't hang about.

Ditto for my '77 and '81 Montecarlos, which I've been feeding super unleaded for several years now with nary a problem (so far and touch wood!)

I use Castrol Valve Master Plus in my Montecarlo, better safe than sorry I always say ;)

Nick.

True, Grace says I should have married the Monte in 2001 as I seem to spend more time with it than her!  ;)
