Hi

Since we're approaching the season where I'm very likely to see a lot of Fulvias and I want to be able to say what a nice Series n Coupe / Sport / Sedan you've got (well, they're all nice aren't they!) ... can someone please list the distinguishing featuring so that I can recognise them :) ( really simple please ) ( although if it ISN'T really simple any explanation would be great )

Well I'll start the ball rolling with a few pointers just on Coupe cars

1. eyebrows over the headlights - only on S2 & S3 rhd cars. All others had no eyebrows Anorak fact - South African rhd S2 & 3 cars had no eyebrows.
2. All S1 cars had 13 inch wheels. S2 & 3 had 14 inch
3. S1 cars had just the one column stalk. S2/3 had three
4. All S1 cars (except Fanalone) were 4 speed
5. Fanalone cars were S1 and had big central headlights

Visual differences between S2 & 3 1.3 cars are most obvious in the interior
S2 had black instrument faces, S3 white
S2 had wooden effect steering wheel, S3 black plastic (though many changed now)
S2 had vinyl seats, S3 mainly cloth but some vinyl ones
S2 no front headrests on 1.3, S3 had headrests
S3 had no 1.6 version.

I'm sure that others can add to that!

Fulvia Berlina's,
Light Grey Berlina HCG 30K on left is a Series 2 ex Betty Reece,
note the differences in headlamps outers larger than inners, Headlamp surrounds, grille, series 2 having the rubber facing to the bumpers, no chrome ring around indicators, Hubcaps with Lancia Badges.



Dark Grey (Doncaster) Berlina Fay 224D on right is Series 1 owned by me since 1997.
All headlamps are the same size, chrome surrounds, Grille is diffrent shape to series 2 and has Stainless steel surround, Chrome centre piece on bonnet has a chrome 'L' on a blue enameled background, chrome surrounds to front indicators, and Stainless steel Bumpers( NO Rubber Facings). Plain Hubcaps with 'Lancia' impressed.
That's it for frontal, rear and interiors to follow. :D

Series 3 Fulvia coupes have different rear panel badges, series 1 have a very nice classic script  all in one Lancia Fulvia, series 2 have small (1"x 5" approx.) rectangular alloy badges with separate "Lancia" on the lhs of the rear panel  and Fulvia  on the Rhs of the rear panel .  Series 3 Fulvia badges are rectangular but larger (1.5" x 6" approx.) with the number 3 beside the Fulvia to denote the 3rd series. This has a black background with raised letters in sanserif script. :)

And the S2 1600HF bodyshell is different to the 1300 S2 and S3 shell, it has flared arches on the rear, and the front panel has larger oblong holes where the bumper irons prottude, and only S2 and S3 Coupes have opening quarter lights.But of course I could be wrong 8)

I agree with that and also think the front wings are different in profile to accommodate the wider wheels, though the change in shape is not as obvious as the rears.

Also S1 cars don't have rubber strips in the bumpers, S2 & 3 do.

There are so many variations between the series when you think about it, the opening fly windows is correct.  ;)

Series 1. 1.3 Rallye Coupe S also has opening qtr lights, I also seem to remember my series 1 1.3 Rallye coupe (not an S) also had opening rear qtr windows.

series 1 Have large round Red & Blue heater control Knobs with water valve control under dash drivers side.
4 speed gearbox has a long thick floor mounted gear lever.
front floor has no obstructions so it is easy to get in using either door without having to climb over anything.

 
Series 2-3 Have rubber facings to the bumpers, 5 speed Gearboxes with Central Console, sliding heater controls

One small correction concerning wheel sizes: this was 14 inch for all cars, coupe and berlina, except series 1 Coupe Rallye 1.6 HF "Fanalone", which had 13 X 6 inch wheels.

Right then Steve, have you got all of that ....... should make identification really easy as you drive towards one at a closing speed of, say, 100mph !!!!

Seriously though, thank you Steve for asking the question and thank you to everyone that has responded. I have always wanted to know a little more about the identifying features of the Fulvia cars. However, I find that unless I see cars side by side, with age identifying number plates, all the information just fuses into a blur. Still, at my age, just trying to remember stuff is sufficient exercise !!

Yes, well I though the question would have a lot of answers ...
Like you Andy, I'd love to see them side by side and will try and get some reference pictures from Goodwood this year.
There is the same issue with integrales of course which prompted the question and we got given the Beta tour by Andy at last year's Beta 40th.
But the information here is great , perhaps I produce a crib sheet :)

Here are the Berlina rear ends photos.
Series 1 with very pretty and delicate styling, a 'broad Lance' raised section on the boot lid,
Horizontal rear light assemblies, and Fulvia script., Reflectors between tail lamps and bumper, large single number plate lamp housing with 2 bulbs.


Series 2, Rubber faced bumper with plainer styling, Oval upright tailamp assemblies. Oblong badges,
Twin Number plate lamps mounted on bumper, stainless steel moulding strip outlining rear panel and light assemblies..

Brian I mean't front quarter lights, as when i fitted alloy doors from a s1 on one of my s2 fulvia coupes the quarterlights were fixed glass :)

Roger,
I was also talking about front door qtr lights, so the door you fitted came from a 1.3 Rallye Coupe, whereas if the qtr light had opened it would have come from an 'S'. All very confusing ::)

And then within the various models of S1 Berlina's there are external differences.
Those that spring to mind are of course the badging - our GTE which was the final version of the S1 Berlina has rectangular GTE badges on the lhs of the rear panel and the grille and the 'Lancia Fulvia' script on the rear is different I think to previous models (I may nbe wrong about this as I have another 'Lancia Fulvia' script which has the same locating pins on the rear).
Also the GTE hubcaps have a riveted Lancia badge and there are also chrome wheel trims screwed to lugs on the wheels.
There were front and rear bumper overriders fitted to one version of the S1 Berlina - was it the 2C GT or the single carb model......or maybe the special Greek export version?

Roger, some of the s1 alloy doors have opening qtr lights, the majority didn't, i think (dont hold me to this!) but i think the rally didn't but the rally S did have opening qtr windows in the doors, i've got 3 sets of alloy doors in the workshop at the moment, 2 with fixed glass and 1 with opening  ::)

I fitted with difficulty opening quarter-lights to my alloy doors as they had fixed and the steel they replaced had opening.....

Chris she's looking good!.
The hubcaps were carried over to Series 2 Berlina.
Only the first Berlina the Normale with the twin choke downdraught carbuirettor had over riders, these were dropped with the introduction of the 2c that replaced the Normale, although they did run side by side for a period.
The Series 1 Coupes had the Fulvia Script on the back, but the pin spacings were different.
although I'm not sure if the Sport had the script as well? I would also think that the spare Fulvia script is too big to be the one that fits the radio panel? other than that I can't think what else it would fit.
