Hampshire Meet - Main Thread

This is the official thread intended to communicate the latest news regarding all matters ‘Hampshire’.  Check back here to confirm no changes to the usual meet time/ location have been published or post here to ask a question.

I will keep this first post updated to show the current venue so check here to confirm 'where & when'.

We are now meeting (since Nov 2014) at The Cart & Horses in Kings Worthy, at the junction of the A33 and B3047,  on the FIRST TUESDAY OF EVERY MONTH.  All Lancisti from Hampshire and beyond are welcome, and to be fair we won’t frown if you turn up in an interesting non-Lancia car instead.

My direct contact details are published in the back of Viva Lancia or alternatively you can PM me via the forum.

The Lancia Motor Club Hampshire Members look forward to seeing you there.

(from 7pm onwards)

I tried to post the following last night, but the forum appeared to have tripped and I was unable to post.

Better late than never:

What a fantastic inaugural meeting. Many many thanks to all who came to make the first LMC Hampshire meet at The Chestnut Horse a success.
Hats off to Peter and Barbara for arriving in an Ypsilon, to Will and Neil for coming in a Kappa, to Theo for trekking the furthest and bringing his Gamma Coupe, to Charles for expertly parking his lovely Aprilia in a prime promotional spot and an extra special thank you to Pat for coming in her special bodied Lambda... fantastic!
To all the other members not mentioned above who made the effort to come, I thank you also because the meet is only as successful as the people who are there.
(Apologies if I have got names of people or cars wrong by the way!)

Looking forward to the summer months when the car park will be full of Lancias and the decked area full of Lancisti.

Mark

Thanks Neil.  Really appreciated your attendance last night.  I shall endeavour to show my face at The Abinger in the Barchetta as soon as I have an MOT and the sun is out  8)

Well done Mark for organising this and for choosing an excellent venue. And well done to all who came and made this a successful first Hampshire meeting and my thanks also to the ladies in The Chestnut Horse who looked after us well. And I think the excellent food at The Chestnut Horse is worth a mention too  ;D

Well done Mark from Jan and I, a very pleasant evening, good food and excelent company.  Summer evening meetings should be good, taking advantage of the inviting garden area - roll on the warm balmy light evenings!

Hampshire meet this Tuesday don't forget... what better way to finish the first working day of a 4-day week than with a drink at a lovely pub  ;D

Geoff has already promised to take the dust covers off his Lancia, take her for a spin and see us there.  I will be there too obviously, sadly Lancia-less for the foreseeable  :-\

A very big thank you to all who attended on Tuesday.  It was a tad busy in the pub but hopefully it was just a freak occurrence and Tuesday's aren't generally so bustling.

It was great to see Geoff Wheeler's Series 1 Fulvia Zagato and equally great to hear The Colonel's Gamma burbling around the car park.  As usual (and by that we obviously mean having attending both of the LMC Hampshire events so far) was Peter's Series 4 Ypsilon... a car I always wanted to own myself as I used to have a series 2.

A particularly fantastic surprise was that a couple who were not LMC members (although had once been many years earlier when they had owned a Fulvia) had gotten wind of the meet and had made the effort to trek over.  What a great result!  It was a shame that I had to get back to the blasted office and finish up some loose ends before close of play... I feel that I missed out on a great evening  :-[

I really am looking forward to the summer months (which, given the snow we have had today, seems like a long way off) when I hope to see the car park and street resplendent with Lancias.

Well yesterday was a particularly pleasant evening at The Chestnut Horse, with local LMC members enjoying food, drink and conversation outside on the deck with clear summer skies overhead.  Lancia turnout was good too, with Barbara bringing her delightful S1 Fulvia Coupe out for the first time this year, Buz reminding me of my Uni days by turning up in his very tidy Y10 GTie and Colin wooing non-members with his strategically parked immaculate S1 Fulvia Zagato Sport.  But the car which had the most members looking, prodding and commenting on was Chris Hopkins' (or should I say, Jan's) new Ypsilon.  Despite currently having the wrong badge fore and aft (which, it transpired, can easily be replaced) the Ypsilon has 'Lancia' stamped on the chassis (spotted by Peter Gerrish with his head fully into the engine bay) as well as a Lancia branded battery.

All in all a jolly nice evening and I look forward to many more similar ones throughout the summer :)

I briefly mentioned a summer picnic where we could all pencil in a saturday in the summer to meet at a nice spot, bring our own picnics and then partake in a pleasant drive to a watering hole for an afternoon tipple.  It would be frugal fun.  What say you all?

An utterly FANTASTIC turnout this month!  A big thank you to all who turned up, every one of you in a Lancia :) Sunshine, good food & drink, new faces, great company and a car park resplendent with Torino's finest.  There was also a lot of attention as well as questions and photographs from other general patrons who were pleasantly surprised to be treated to some very interesting cars.

Thank you Pat, Barbara, Peter G, Buz, Nigel, Peter H as well as all the respective partners, friends and neighbours who came along.

Splendid   :D

I'd best get cracking with the Summer picnic and Christmas dinner!

Love this idea Mark, and tried to do somethiing similar on Fulvia 50th, but only just managed a prosecco boot picnic in the Goodwood paddock.  :)

Post by: Lima on 11 June, 2013, 12:13:32 PM
I have had some positive feedback on the idea of a Picnic and there have been mutterings about a Christmas dinner.

Could I have some suggestions regarding both please...

The picnic:  A 'pencilled in' weekend day where everyone brings their car, a blanket, hamper and all manner of scrumptious goodies to enjoy at an agreed rendez-vous.  No expense, no crowds, no rush but probably no sunshine... which is why I say 'pencilled in'! I think that a New Forest picnic might be a nice idea as it gives us plenty of scope for parking and pitching. Those of us for which it becomes a bit of a drive can meet up at pre-determined spots and journey down in convoy.  Ideas from you for a picnic spot would be much appreciated.

The Christmas Dinner:  It seems a bit daft as the nights haven't yet started to draw in (correct at time of going to press) but we really must start to arrange the Christmas dinner event if regional members would like one.  I would think that keeping it central to Hampshire would be better suited to a dark winter's evening, especially if taxis or nominated drivers are being utilised.  The dinner does not have to be at the Chestnut Horse so if members could suggest a good restaurant, hotel or gastro-pub in the central Hampshire area then I'd be pleased to hear from you.

A little late for the update, but I hope I can be excused as I was still reeling from the AGM weekend.

Yet another impressive turnout and yet another new face. Jeremey Harpham turned up and introduced himself, settling in to the Hampshire Meet tradition straight away by making the most of the pub's £12* two course menu and joining in with the banter. (*and then there's a 10% discount off this for LMC members who produce their membership card too).

Sadly, in my exhaustion from the weekend and work that day, I clean forgot to take photos of the cars and so Jeremy's lovely Integrale was not snapped this time.  Perhaps Jeremy and Chris might coordinate the next visit so that I can get two Integrales at the same time  ;D

The pub was a little crowded this month (and not just Lancistsi) but it was still pleasant enough for all I hope.

Post by: Lima on 05 July, 2013, 05:30:31 PM
I had sent a circular to all Hampshire members on my 'mailshot list' and posted here on the forum a while back when there was suspicion of summer approaching.  I heard very little in the way of feedback and nothing regarding suggested location or dates.  I assumed that a picnic wasn't really going to fly.

Now, since the sun has come out, I have had some prompts from a number of people but I'm afraid that I (having assumed the picnic was a non-starter) have  committed myself to organising a private car collection tour in September instead. Sadly spare time for me doesn't extend to undertaking yet another event on top of work, DIY and my studies.  I did make enquiries about the viability regarding a parking/ picnic spot in a hidden Hampshire B-road near me which I'd had in mind but I've since been informed by the estate that it is not for public use.  Not having lived in Hampshire very long I am struggling to think of anywhere else I know. So I would ask, if anyone wishes to organise a summer picnic drive, please do so; for the benefit and enjoyment of the Hampshire gang.  I, unfortunately, cannot now undertake the arranging.

Sorry   :-\

Get your thinking caps on for a Christmas Venue.  Unfortunately Bartley Lodge has been discounted as Barbara has confirmed on a number of occasions already that they now require a £400 pound downpayment.  We must make a choice by the next meet.

As for this month's rendezvous, we were blessed with a visit from our furthest local member... Donald Smith.  Donald (who used to live in these parts) now resides back in Sunny Scotland but visited The Chestnut Horse to reunite himself with local members and to collect his Trophy.  As you will have no doubt read in VL, Donald was awarded the John Maltby Award for The Greatest Contribution To The Club From An Ordinary Member.  Well done Donald.

The car park was a little thin on Lancias this month due to absences and holidays but the regulars Buz and Geoff came in their trusty Y10 GTie and Fulvia Zagato whilst Neil and Dale also trekked over from Surrey in the ever-more-complete Fulvia Coupe.  Lastly, and certainly not least, Donald came in his daily drive... a splendid looking Kappa Coupe.

Many thanks to everyone who came.  ;D

Surprised at the registration number as I would have thought 'P' or 'R' would be as late as you'd have found on a Fulvia with production finishing in 1976, surely this one didn't hang around until 1982 to be sold?

Brian, it is a 1973 car imported to the UK and was registered here in 1982, they did not issue the correct age related plates then, just the current registration letter.  However, I am considering a change to the correct letter registration.

Thanks for the update Neil,
Does it qualify as historic and no tax?
I wouldn't have thought you'd have too much trouble getting an age related plate, seems very odd that they didn't issue one in the first place, as normally you can't get a registration number that is newer than the vehicle  as I think it's illegal! you can certainly put an older one on with no trouble, but not the other way arround.

It is a bit odd having a more modern plate than the real age of the car, (not illegal in this case) but it is not the first LHD Y reg Fulvia I have seen. It is registered on the V5C as 1973, so next year I will qualify for zero tax like the pre 1973 cars at present.  A trip to the DVLA is planned later this month, I did speak to them in June as I did not have the paperwork back from them I could not visit the local office in Wimbledon.

Neil,
Have you checked it's build date against those build figures showing the chassis Number by Model built within the 12 month period that I posted a while ago, although your Fulvia is registered in 1973 it might have been built in 1972.
Do you have the model and chassis number please as I can check for you.

Brian, I have the lists, my car was built in the middle of the 1973 range which ties in with date on the cylinder head (June), it is shame the lists were not broken down by month to get a more accurate date.

Yes those lists have been very useful for many of us I am sure, better than as you say an educated guess.   I often wonder if some months are busier for production than others, did they have a summer shutdown and possibly again at Christmas as some car manufacturers used to do, no idea how the factories operated on a month by month basis.  I am sure their operations would have changed dramatically in the last decade or so.

What a show this month!  A wide spectrum of cars in the car park including Pat's Lambda (which is a fabulous & regular sight at the Chestnut Horse) as well as two Fulvias and a Y10 making up the remainder of the dedicated monthly attendees.  And to spice up the mix a bit we were graced with an immaculate Delta Integrale Evo 2 and a snorting rally-prepared Fulvia, both of which arrived together after a spirited drive to the venue  ;)

Thank you to all that attended.

PS.  There was a rather nice Austin Healey there too (not part of the club contingency)

Just a note to say that the Hampshire meet continues despite me being required elsewhere each tuesday until Christmas.  Barbara, Peter and other die-hard Hampshire Lancisti suffer the warm pub and hearty food & drink in my absence.

An email to all Hampshire (and honorary Hampshire) members in my address book will shortly follow to reiterate the above and prompt for ideas for spring/ summer mini-events.

Title: HAMPSHIRE MEET - every 1st Tuesday - NEW VENUE FOR 2014
Post by: Lima on 12 December, 2013, 10:24:02 PM
NEW YEAR...
...NEW VENUE...
...NEW COORDINATOR

The Chestnut Horse is a pleasant country pub offering the charm of an olde-worlde drinking establishment along with good food. However, because of this, it was a tad popular and it was therefore difficult to find a space to sit and enjoy it. Summer wasn’t too bad, with seating outside, but at times even this proved challenging.

So, following a number of mutterings, it has been agreed (after consultation with the ‘congregation’) that we ought to change venue as of 2014. I must admit that, due to other commitments recently, I have not been party to the selection process but perhaps that was a good thing as I may have been precious about maintaining the idealism of yocal pub and horse brasses on the fireplace etc. As it is, the proposal is something rather different and despite initial reservations I must admit that I am sold on a number of inherent benefits.

The chosen venue for the monthly meet going forward will be the Holiday Inn on the outskirts of Winchester, which is in keeping with the desire to keep the venue central within Hampshire. It is located next to the INTECH Science Centre & Planitarium, off the Alresford Road.

Telegraph Way. Morn Hill. Winchester SO21 1HZ

Whilst the Holiday Inn is arguably the antithesis of The Chestnut Horse, being as it is neither olde- worlde nor a public house, it does offer ample parking, plenty of seating, food at comparable prices and comes with recommendations from other members. From what I have seen it does look rather swish too!
May I also take this opportunity to announce that I am being joined on the rostrum by Geoff Wheeler who will be joint coordinator with me for the Hampshire region. In the event that one of us is swamped with work or on holiday, the other will hopefully be contactable with any queries. My thanks go to Geoff for agreeing to be my wing man and my thanks also go to all the Hampshire members who helped make the local meet such a success in 2013.
Wishing you all a very Happy Christmas & Good Health for the coming year. See you on Tuesday 7th January 2014 :)

Regards
Mark ... & Geoff

With the clocks having just gone forward, my tardy arrival at the Hampshire meet wasn't under a dark sky but instead a bright and clear celestial backdrop.  This afforded me a clear view of a rather splendid Delta quite a way down the car park, which I duly staioned alongside.  This car was new to me and when I joined the small gathering inside I discovered the owner was new to me too.  Indeed he was new to the club and new to Lancia.  We were chuffed to have a new member with us, and an enthusiastic one at that who is all set to come to AutoItalia Bristol day and the AGM.
Unfortunately, I failed to ask the obvious question "what's your name", instead asking "what cars do you have? how did you come about getting such a pristine Delta?  How many miles on the clock" ...etc.  So apologies to our new member and (rightly) proud owner of the car below :)  I shall quiz our Database Wizard (Steve Pilgrim) to ascertain your name and subsequently give you due introduction.
By the way, my name is Mark and it was a real pleasure to chat with you yesterday!  :D

What would cause such a drastic break like that? A little fault in the crank that has gradually grown or just fatigue after years of stresses?

Title: Re: HAMPSHIRE MEET - every 1st Tuesday
Post by: JohnMillham on 12 April, 2014, 08:45:26 PM
There are lots of possible reasons, including its age. Trouble is, that's the second Augusta crank I've broken in about 5 years and one Lambda crank last September. There was also an Appia back in the distant past! Possible reasons include running the cars on fewer cylinders than normal for a while (for various reasons!) and having reground cranks with abrupt corners, rather than the recommended 2 mm minimum radius. There's much discussion going on in Lambda and Augusta circles.

Title: VENUE CHANGE FOR 1st JULY '14
Post by: Lima on 20 June, 2014, 02:17:18 PM
Dear Hampshire* LMC Member

(*and neighbouring counties)

For the July regional meeting (Tuesday 1st July) we shall be trialling a recently refurbished pub not too far from our current venue.

The pub in question is The Ropley (formerly called The Anchor), situated on the A31at the junction with the Petersfield Rd to Ropley.  The pub is located next to a Shell petrol station (convenient if you've burned up a tank of fuel zipping between the roundabouts just west of our destination).

I have included directions (attached) and look forward to seeing some of you there.  Please alert other members who you believe will be making an appearance this month, who otherwise might turn up at The Holiday Inn instead.

Should The Ropley be well received by the congregation, we would look to make this our new base as it offers something a little less clinical than the current venue.

Regards and safe driving.

Mark.

Many thanks to Peter and Barbara for suggesting their local as an alternative venue for this month's meet. The Ropley provided a very nice setting, good food and commendable service. Thanks to all that attended including the two Geoffs, Donald, Jeremy and of course Pat.
Lancias present were Lambda, Ypsilon, Gamma Coupe, Kappa Coupe and Integrale :)

Well, I managed to find it in the end although the Sat Nav decided to take us on a sightseeing tour of Hampshire before getting us there. I must update my 2009 maps....

Here's some pictures of the cars present:

I'm afraid that I simply cannot. Too many times I turn up in my work suit and on more than one occasion I've had to return to the office AFTER the meet.

VENUE CHANGE

Transcript of the circular I issued to all LMC Hampshire Members (those that have provided me with their email addresses) in Circular No7:

Variety is the spice of LMC Life

Our regional meet has for some time been struggling to find a suitable venue. The original haunt was The Chestnut Horse but lack of bar seating and a consistently full car park meant that a change was requested. Subsequently we rendezvoused at The Holiday Inn which, despite ample parking and lots of seating, lacked warmth and personality. Most recently members have been convening at The Cricketers in Alresford but, whilst having a great car park, the interior and the food (whilst not bad) has room for improvement. The rather poor attendance last month isn’t attributed to the venue but it did prompt us to reignite the topic of ‘location, location, location’.
!So we are going to continue the search for the Holy Grail of LMC Hampshire venues and for the Tuesday 4th November meet we are going to shift nearer to where we started and sample The Cart & Horses in Kings Worthy, at the junction of the A33 and B3047 (London Rd. SO23 7QN)

Interestingly this very pub had briefly been considered by local members as it ticks the ‘character’, ‘size’ and ‘food’ boxes but was discounted on the assumption that the car park was small. However a more thorough investigation reveals that it has anything but a small car park, concealing as it does, a very large parking area at the rear. In fact the car park has an upper level which during the summer could be exclusively commandeered by us if we are suitably early/ savvy. Sadly the summer months are some way off, so for now we shall simply test the water... or ales!

So if the November meeting at the Cart & Horses is well received then we shall continue henceforth at this venue and we could enquire about our Christmas meal too... the festive period is almost upon us again. Alternatively, other suggestions are welcome of course.

WOW! Clearly the shift to British Summer Time and a bit of nice weather was enough to coax an impressive turnout today.  Many thanks to all that came and made this evening one of the best to date

The line up was distinctly modern today and we were treated to two Integrale Evolutions, both in amazing condition (Keith's in yellow, Chris' in Black).  The grand daddy of the line up was Buz' Y10 GTie which sounded fruity with its custom exhaust (as well as a custom badge on the boot lid).  Donald's Kappa is a regular at the event but is always a point of discussion and bonnet lifting.  And the line up was completed with the youngest of all Lancias, Barbara's Red & Black edition Ypsilon which looks much better than the base model with surprisingly good quality interior.

Sadly we didn't manage more than two Deltas as Roger's HF Turbo sprang a petrol leak and his daily drive was relegated to the lower car park.  Myself and Geoff turned up in our respective hairdresser convertibles which can be seen back of shot being completely upstaged by the family of Lancias.

Conversation flowed and topics were wide and interesting.  This evening went down as one of the best.  Thank you to everyone who made the effort to attend.  See you all soon

Small gang of 6 today but 3 lancias in the car park (Donald's Kappa, Roger's plastic-wrapped Delta Turbo and Barbara's Ypsilon).
New face today, Martin, who will hopefully be regaining us with progress on his Fulvia 2C at future meets.

Despite the small numbers, conversation and car viewing was so intense thT I completely forgot to take pictures of the cars!

Next month, if weather is better than today, there will probably be at least one Integrale :)

Mark,
I'm intrigued! Martin who ? what 2c? any photos? is it the one that was for sale in Ireland? the ex Robin Lacey 2c CTA 762c?, one of the only three (including mine) that I've known since 1995, and is the oldest one of the three, although my "Fay" is only a few months behind.

As well as Gerard Thorp potentially joining us we may also be blessed with attendance from new members Colin & Barbara Welburn tonight.  Colin is contemplating the purchace of a Fulvia in due course but being 6'2" tall is concerned that he may not fit comfortably in one.  It would be nice if we could rustle up a Fulvia for Colin to sit in tonight as he cannot make the AGM.

See y'all later.  I'm bringing the Integrale  ;D

I'm 6' 1" and have never had a problem so he should be OK. Recently someone refused to believe I could get in it and I had to prove I could and sit with arms and legs out normally. Not sure why they considered the Fulvia to be so tiny. Years ago I used to comfortably drive a MG Midget. I suppose it's because there are no genuine small cars anymore.

Mark,
Find him a Series 2 Berlina, they had a ride with me in "Fay" at Goodwood track day and colin had no problems ;D I am still keeping an eye open for him but no luck so far, perhaps Chris Hopkins could find another like the one he took to Fulvias in Norfolk, lovely, and it was great running together with another Berlina for a change!

Well I think that we have convinced Colin to purchase a Fulvia 2C, or maybe even a Coupe. Colin, keep us posted on progress and we hope to see you in something more Italian than a silver mondeo soon  ;)

Today we had a good turnout and topics of discussion was varied with lots of laughs. Thanks to new attendee Gerard, Colin, Pat, Barbara, Peter, Donald, Geoff and his buddy Jeremy too.

Musa (Gerard's, as featured in a recent VL article on importing Lancias), 3 Kappas and an Integrale today.
Hampshire is proving to be the home of the Kappa Coupe!

A good turnout of cars tonight, with only me, the host, not arriving in a Lancia!  :-\

We were down to two Kappa Coupes today, and Barbara's Ypsilon taking it's familiar spot as usual.  We were treated to two rare cars though, Chris' Dedra Integrale and Fred's 1400 Beta... original and rust-free!!!

Next month I shall do the right thing... arrive in style; arrive in a Lancia  ;D

Tuesday 2nd August.  Weather looks to be okay (correct at time of going to press).

We might have a record-breaking number of Integrales this time (makes a change from Kappas!) if Keith and Simon turn up in theirs.  Hope so.  Anyone else want to rock up in a Delta this Tuesday?  It would be fun to see lots together at this nice pub.

Also, can all Lancisti perhaps bring camping/ travel chairs like I did last time - we could then sit by the cars with our drinks.   ;D

Thought i'd post this here in case anyone is interested in another Italian car meet in Hampshire.
Most Alfa's at the moment i went a couple of times last year and a nice friendly crowd.
On the first Saturday of the month at the departure lounge cafe in Alton. Starting next month 1st April.
Be good to get a few Lancias there.
