Post by: peterbaker on 01 November, 2011, 07:21:15 PM
That got your attention. I came across this while looking for gems to include in a fifty year feature on Retro-Speed. Motor Sport December 1961.

Lancia Augusta. One owner since 1936. Two new tyres and battery. MOT. Good order throughout. £75. Tel. Hastings  51407. Moss. Pankhurst Farm. West field. Sussex.

I tried the number but it was out of order.

Usually I go to the Bank of England inflation calculator and the answer is "about what you'd expect", but £75 in 1961 is still only £1300 today...  Were cars like that still only "cheap transport" back then?

I remember "School for Scandal" where Terry Thomas trades in some great Brooklands Special type thing for the latest sports car?  Turns out it was "School for SCOUNDLRELS" based on the play "...for Scandal" and that was made in 1960.

Wiki says:

"Vehicles  The film uses notable vehicles as plot devices. Palfrey foolishly buys a "1924 4-litre Swiftmobile" from the crooked "Winsome Welshmen". Later in the film he succeeds in trading the car back to them for an ex-works Austin-Healey 100-six and £100. The "Swiftmobile" was in fact based upon a 1928 4½ litre Open four-seater Bentley, with a custom two seat open body. The car, minus the body, was sold by the studio in 1961 for £50, and sold (with a new body) at auction in 2003 for £110,000. The Austin-Healey 100-six used in the film was passed in at auction in the 1970s at around £30,000.[9]

The car driven by Terry-Thomas in the film, stated as a "New Bellini", is in fact a disguised Aston Martin DB3S"

£75 seems about right for 1961 bought my first Lancia that year a concours Aprilia for £150 including loads of spares.  If I had known more I could have bought a Lambda for less.

My first Augusta was bought in 1964 as a going concern for £50 from John Maltby.

An Augusta is currently for sale in Italy for E35,000 how times have changed!
