Title: Fulvia Sport on the road again... kind of.
Post by: kernow on 16 September, 2011, 06:38:14 PM
Hi All,

Finally got the FSZ on the road. Bought the car in April from original owner, 20 years off the road. Lots of recommissioning - all the usual things. Here's the first run out, followed by first breakdown :D debris in fuel tank working free. Tank now away for cleaning and relining.

Hopefully back on the Cornish roads again soon,

Cheers

Chris

Brilliant - another FSZ hits the road! You dont appear to be in the Z register maintained by Roddy Young. He would be very happy to add your car I am sure.

When I restored my FSZ some 5 years ago, I only had a couple of breakdowns (one in a forest in the Ardennes), but am still "debugging" minor issues. However it is a consumate pocket GT car for continental work. Melloni (which is what our family call her) has just returned from a 1000 mile weekend in Burgundy which I have written up for a future issue of VL.

Thanks guys - looking forward to putting some miles on the car. Shame I missed the summer but lots of niggly little things to fix. Looking forward to an Indian Summer (fingers crossed).

OK, I think the fuel tank is pretty shot :-\. Any ideas where I might track down a good second hand replacement?

Cheers

Its not that expensive having a tank made.  Someone on here will know the contact of Graem (GB Fabrications or something, Google's not helping and I don't have my book to hand) who's a wizz with ali and who's son had a Fulvia Zagato off Richard Fridd a while back.  Worth a call at least.  You'd then know it was clean, baffled, and perhaps even some foam in there for peace of mind.

I bought a new one from Cavalitto (over email) some 6 years ago. Came with a Lancia part number tag...

Thanks for the suggestions - Might have found a tank. Thinking of upgrading to an electronic fuel pump at the same time to eliminate a potential source of problems. Any tips?

Cheers

 Hi Chris,
Many of us have kept the mechanical fuel pumps that on the whole perform quite well, but have added a fuel filter/regulator if one isn't already fitted, (I used a filter king from Demon tweeks) and have also fitted a solid state or otherwise electric pump, to eliminate all the churning over that seems to be part and parcel of most, if not all fulvia starting after standing a few days.
In my case I've had one fitted adjacent to the fuel tank on my 2c with a switch and warning light, this is turned on until it stops clicking and the warning light stops flickering, then with a bit of choke she fires first time, it's also nice to know you have a backup if the mechanical pump fails, but this hasn't happened in 12 years and 20,000 miles.

I have the pump on the right inside wing which works well. Other bits are like Brian's installation.

So, finally managed to track down a fuel tank for the Sport. It's a Series 1 tank so took it to a local tank/radiator refurbisher and they fitted the return pipe that's missing from the S1 tanks (as my car is an S2). Got the tank back yesterday and awoke with a real spring in my step at the thought of the car being back on the road. Just before refitting it, some weird instinct made me peer down the fuel feed pipe and bingo - day light! Further investigation with a torch revealed a large hole in the pipe inside the tank near where it meets the tank wall.  >:( One concillation is that I checked before fitting otherwise it would just have been sucking air and not fuel to the carbs!

Is this a common fault? Ahhh! Back to the tank repair garage.

Never heard of this. The pick up pipe should go to the bottom directly in line with the drain plug which has a complex muck filter assembly on the drain plug itself.

The hole is where the pick-up pipe exits the tank, about 5mil from the tank wall. Can't believe I actually checked. Spot of luck, could have spent ages trying to diagnose the problem...

Tank fitted :) still fuelling problems :( Replacement standard pump didn't solve it. Next step, electric fuel pump set-up. Graham Eddy is trying to sort it, but having broken down three times taking the car around the block, when I dropped in the other day the car was sitting in the corner of his workshop awaiting the arrival of said pump. I just realised it's been almost a year since I bought the car. Who said recommissioning was an a simple job?

More news soon hopefully.

No one in their right mind ::)

Once you've got it sorted and on the road, all the problems fade into insignificance!
