Title: Strange Augusta for Sale
Post by: JohnMillham on 16 August, 2011, 07:43:17 AM
How about this for a strange one? A convertible with a fuel tank under the bonnet? Is it another one which was a saloon originally? I wonder which back axle it has - saloon or chassis?

What's the badge on the grill?  Anyone recognise any saloon panels that might have been reused?

Hi

The badge says Weber, see

http://www.racecarsforsale.com/historic-racing-cars/lancia-augusta-cabrio.html

Gives larger photos if you click on the multi arrowed bit.

This one has been for sale for ages, always thought it looked quite attractive myself, just need the money!

looks like a saloon dash too, the rear boby work looks like modified saloon, i'm pretty sure its a chopped saloon, probably done a long time ago but it is a strange beast  ???

I quite like the styling but I certainly wouldn't want a petrol tank sitting over my legs like that, especially one that size :o
I used to have a 1927 Austin 7 with a gravity fed tank in the same position but it was about a 1/4 of the size of that one!

Quite like this http://www.fa-automobile.com/detail-vente.php?car-for-sale=Lancia-Vignale-Prototype&id=24&v=2037#
I'm assuming it's based on an aurelia B52?

[/quote]All standard augusta/ belna saloons have this type of tank Brian, only the chassis / cabriolets had under floor tanks at the rear of the car, this is why we think its a chopped saloon, it doesn't really worry me , my philosophy is if the car gets hit that hard to burst the tank i doubt i'd have survived anyway (especially with no seat belts)  ::) realistically it would have been far better to have a rear mounted tank origionally but the augusta does have a few stupid designs mainly its cylinder head  ;)

The Augusta is a cut down saloon, it has been for sale for a while, at one auction they actually described it as by Pinin Farina, which it obviuosly isn't!  The Aurelia Brian refers to is a B50 Vignale, there were 3 cars built in the same style, although in one advert for the car it is described as unique. Caveat emptor!

Not sure that I agree with Chugga that the scuttle tank on the Augusta is such a bad idea. It gets a lot of petrol tucked away in an otherwise useless space, provides infallible gravity feed to the carburetter and a direct mechanical shaft drive to the gauge on the dashboard immediately behind.  Scuttle tanks tanks were fairly common in the 1920s.  The Augusta does sensibly put the filler under the bonnet whereas the very sporting AC had the filler in the dashboard in front of the passenger, which meant that a casual attendant might deposit a pint or so of petrol in her lap.
