Title: Stuart wilsons coast to coast walk
Post by: stuwilson128 on 08 July, 2011, 11:58:36 AM
Thank you to all of you who have sponsored me for my coast to coast walk. I set off this morning at 8:15 and am already near Ennerdale. I have taken about 1 hour less than planned to get to my current position! I will try to update again tomorrow.

Today was much more of struggle than yesterday. The first leg was so monotonous! It was not helped by me straining calf late yesterday, consequently I had to take things a little more slowly. This was followed by lots of bogs. This resulted in me not getting as far as I wanted. I resorted to a bit of wild camping on the fell tops! Hope to reach Shap tomorrow. Sorry there was no update yesterday but I had no phone signal. Due to fatigue, boggy ground and the weight of my pack I only made it as far as patterdale. Feeling refreshed today so now onward to shap!

Back in the 1960s, I was on a trip in my B20 to Spadeadam to see the Blue Streak Rocket, when my only remaining wiper fell of and blew away in a snow storm at Shap. Luckily, the first one fell of earlier that day and I recovered it, so I could drive with one hand and wipe the snow away with the other! That was before the M6 of course. Weather should be better at this time of the year. Good luck Stuart.
 Regards, John

Back in the late 1950's Early 1960's I used to drive HGV's for a living, halfway up Shap on the old road before they built the motorway used to be a very renowned transport Cafe called 'the Jungle'
No doubt long gone.
Those were the days before curtain siders and you had to sheet and rope your load ::)

Good luck Stuart! You're doing it a lot faster than I did! Camping rough?! What's that? We did cosy B&Bs...
Keep going, good for you

Made it to Kirkby Stephen today. Nearly half way! Conditions were better for walking as it wasn't as hot as yesterday. Big push starts tomorrow as I hope to make it to reeth.

"If you keep right on to the end of the road, keep on right round the bend  ;D
Though the way be long, let your heart be strong - keep on right round the bend  ;D
Though you're tired and weary, it won't be long 'till you come to that happy abode
Where those you love and been dreamin' of
Will be there!
At the end of the road!"

Keep it up Stu! (Above written from memory of the way my Dad used to sing it, no doubt from WWII.)

Yesterday was a day to forget. Struggled to reeth having strained my right foot. Was then up to my knees going over the moors. Then to cap it off, ripped my trousers! Got to Bolton on swale today. It was a struggle to get to Richmond, but once there got some support for my foot so hopefully it will make the going a little easier.

Well, so much for making up some of my lost time. I found today the most draining mentally as the route was extremely tedious. I also found my motivation and enthusiasm to have deserted me. Here's hoping tomorrow is a better day. Now camped up behind the bluebell inn at ingleby cross.

Stuart, here is an old Irisp prayer to help you on your way, short version,

May the road rise to greet you,
May the sun shine upon your face,
May the wind be always at your back,
May the rain fall softly on your fields,
May you be in heaven half an hour before the devil knows your dead.
Thanks David ;D

I have finally managed to sort a few pictures of my Coast to Coast Walk.  Thank you to everybody who spnsored me and for all of your support during the walk.  Your comments certainly helped me during the tougher times of the walk!

As long as I manage to collect all of the money that has been pledged, I will have raised a total of £933!

A big thank you to everybody who sponsored me for my Coast to Coast walk.  I have now made a payment to Help for Heroes for the money which has been donated offline.  In all, I have raised a total of £1100.  In addition to this, I expect my employer to donation match my efforts by adding a further £200 to the charity  :)
