Title: 1983 (Beta) HPE Volumex
Post by: Paul Greenway on 29 March, 2011, 05:18:21 PM

The time has come for a change so I am offering for sale my prized VX HPE. Owned just over 4 years by myself it has had three previous owners - Millar Bros, Kenilworth Oct '83- Jun '84, 2nd owner until May '92, 3rd owner (who restored between '96 & '99) until Feb '07 when I purchased. Copies of all V5's are available.

The car has covered 6,000 miles in my ownership and never been off the road. It is in extremely good condition and well known within the LMC and is I believe (although I stand to be corrected) the only one left with the OE "Supercharged" side stripes.

2007 concours winner and 2009 Masteclass entrant, it has been displayed at the 2009 NEC classic car show and also the 2011 Event City classic car show in Manchester.

It has covered 55,600 genuine miles and has just had a full service and MOT in February.

The car is described IMHO as follows-

Structurally- 100% needs nothing.
Mechanically- 100% (£4,000 spent in my ownership)
Electrically- 95% everything works including all interior lights etc. Only issue is severed rear wash system although motor and wiper work fine.
Bodywork/Cosmetically- 90% slight bubbling to scuttle under windscreen, passenger door micro-blistering, small scuffs to lip of both front & rear offside arches (you have to look for them). None of these have deteriorated any further than since the day I purchased- I keep in dehumidified garage.
Interior- 90% only frayed cloth to outside of drivers upper seat caused by seat belt rubbing spoils the effect.

There you have it a thoroughly genuine HPE VX and one of the best you will find needing very little expenditure to make the finest.

Selling because I fancy a Gamma Sedan, Thema 8.32 or (Flavia)2000HF and Claire won't allow me to have two.

Asking £3,950.00 which I believe to be a fair and reasonable price in the current market.

Any questions feel free to call on 07793 528077.

Looks great. Surely has to be worth the asking price.

I have decided not to sell my VX HPE after all. Having just done two weekends in it will 500 or so trouble free enjoyable miles why would I sell it? What could I get to replace it for the same type of fun, practicality and money? Not a lot that I can think of even though A Gamma Sedan still appeals as does a Thema 8.32 (more expensive for a proper sorted car) and so does a 2000HF (more expensive still), yet would any prove more reliable? Don't know- probably not!

Besides, the interest in the HPE has been rubbish, only Lindsay responded to the advert with his kind words on this forum, no-one bothered on the Beta forum and despite numerous E-mails and promises from all those folk who responded on the classiccarsforsale.com and carandclassic.com websites no-one actually telephoned me nor viewed the car nor acknowledge receipt or thanks for additional photos and detail sent to them. What a complete waste of time. (At least the advertising is free)

Its a shame particularly on the LMC and Beta sites that no-one commented (good or bad) as the car is well known in the club and attends plenty of events, but that's life I suppose, from this experience all that I have learned is that I have absolutely no idea as to what the car is worth and if it is in the right ball park.

Anyway that is good for me I suppose, because now I will continue to use as is for the next year then undertake the teeny weeny issues the following year to bring up to true concours level.

Hi Paul. Yes, I think you definitely vastly overpriced it so how about we agree on £850 and I'll pick it up very quickly indeed!!    ;D

Your logic is very correct in terms of what else could you get for the money. None would be as reliable as what you have and better the devil you know in most cases. Decent 8.32s are going for strong money now and non decent one's will cost a fortune to put right.

The VX is ultra rare so what not to like? Only down side is if you're like me and want to experience as many as possible.

I don't know if you put an ad on Omicron's site but if you do change your mind, it may be a good place- as with the viva-lancia site (are we allowed to promote other websites??). Also, don't forget there are over 2000 keen Lancisti would get the Viva Lancia magazine each month - given this site seems to have only a relative few core punters who regularly post, it may be that many Lancia people are not interweb minded, so an advert in the club magazine may well be worth a shot - especially as there are hardly any cars for sale in it these days.

However, whatever you decide, at least you have a cracking car just now!!
Best of luck, Lindsay

Hi Paul, I'm sure you have made the right decision !! I don't know your car but I ran an HPE 2000ie for 4 years and what a brilliant car it was. The rust problem proved terminal in spite  of a friendly welder and a sympathetic MOT man, and I was very sad to see it go.

Hold on to your car and enjoy it, a superbly thought out practical car and now a real rarity.

Good luck,

                  Andy

Hang onto it Paul as it looks too nice to sell! if not have you tried AutoItalia as I think you can still advertise FOC and at least your advertising it to people who are already Italian car enthusiasts.

Thanks for your ideas and kind words gents, I am not going to bother advertising again, however I will be taking it to either the Auto Italia day at Stanford Hall or Tatton Park classic on June 5th- can't decide which (unless weather is horrendous then it will be Stanford in the Alfa again) and it's definitely doing the full AGM weekend regardless so if there's any interest I may be tempted to sell or px but I am currently resigned to keeping it, I just get itchy feet now again and fancy a change.

erm, not wishing to be rude here, but do I take it my very generous offer of £850 is of no interest????

Unfortunately Lindsay on this occasion and without prejudice I can  inform you that have been unsuccessful in your bid, however if you could find a further £2800 I could be swayed to sell as you seem such a nice sort of chap!

If I had another 6 inches of headroom in the garage I would have been swayed Paul! I loved the HPE's I had and would love another but it has to be garaged...... Poo.

Now that's an interesting offer Lindsay, not really my cup of char but it would possibly appeal to my wife. How do you put a figure on it, SL500 values are all over the place £2000 -£15,000 for that model (see Autotrader) at the moment, however I'm sure your'e joking, but if you are serious please send me more details, photo's etc and tell me more about your Merc for consideration, but no guarantees.

I would maybe see it as a summer car before trading in for another Lancia (8.32, Gamma Sedan or 2000HF) which is the only reason I advertised my VX in the first place as I just fancy a change of model not brand (sorry marque).

Hi Paul. I wouldn't do it to you honestly. Whilst it is in cracking order costmetically and all round really, it is a bag of bolts really and I wouldn't recommend it to anyone, least of all a fellow Lancia enthusiast. I will be attempting to sell it shortly, once the number plate is off it. Once that is done I will give you a shout about a sale, rather than a swap.

best regards
Lindsay

No problem Lindsay, that's probably the best bet, hope your sale goes well.

Cheers,

Paul.

Should I say well done? Did it go to a Club member? or can we assume we might be getting a new member?? :)

Have you decided on what the replacement will be yet?

Andy

Paul- interested to see how you got on and whether you did sell through ebay-have feeling that both my spyder and HPE Volumex (or hopefully just one) will have to go on the market shortly due to pressure fromher indoors so it would be interesting to compare notes!

Colin.

She has gone to a member of the consortium, not sure if a club member but will find out when she gets collected later this week. Just polished her up she looks mega.

As for a replacement, many ideas- firstly still toying with importing a late Thesis, just awaiting some information. If this does happen then I will probably just have the one Lancia (at least in the short term).

If not I will be on the look out for a 2000HF (the car I was after 5 years ago when I picked up the VX) or a Thema 8.32, but if something else crops up and it takes my fancy who knows?

The purchaser did see the car on E-bay initially, but we agreed a satisfactory price outside the auction and thats why it was withdrawn early. I had two bidders and 68 watchers when I withdrew it about 6hrs before close of auction so who knows what might have happened.

Don't tell Ebay that or they'll be after their fee!

Hi Paul
I have a 200k km 8.32. German car originally, fully stamped book until imported into UK at around 190k around 10 years ago. Just seen your post. Sorry haven't got exact details as my son in law has all the info and is just finishing fettling it for me. He has replaced cambelts and timing belts, O rings, manifold gasket. sump gasket and I believe quite a bit more. I hope to collect it next weekend. I don't get a lot of use out of it, and although all the belts were changed only 2-3,000 kms ago, it was many years ago. I was thinking of putting it into Anglia Car Auction in Kings Lynn on 13th Nov, hence all the work, as I'm not sure it would sell very quickly without the work. If you are interested I can contact you as soon as I have it back. It won the Thema concours at the LMC in Albrighton in I think 2009. Body and interior immaculate. grey black metallic (not sure of exact colour name), black leather interior. It's a great car getting no use, but this work is going to cost me a bit. It looks like prices are on the up, which is what prompted me to do the work, but it seems difficult to put a precise value on it. Have a think if you're still interested. I don't want to give it away and we may have a very different opinion of it's value but I thought it worth contacting you. I have loads of photos I can send if you're interested.

Now Lancia less. This requires to be rectified before next years GNW at the V latest.

My HPE was collected this morning by Chas & Anne May who also own another HPE VX, a Fiat Sport Spider and an Alfa GT. Although sad I know that it is going to a good home of fellow Beta Consortium members, however not as yet LMC members.
I say as yet because I have told them how good this club is and encouraged them to become new members to which they showed a positive interest and said they would become.

Cars on my list now include first choice a 2009 low mileage (under 30,000 miles (50k km)) Thesis Jtd Emblema or Centanario which will become my everyday car assuming no issues in importing and obtaining full UK legality. This will replace my current Alfa Brera which goes back to Alfa mid January.

Failing that, I will replace the Alfa with another vehicle on a PCH and then be looking to add either a 2000HF, Thema 8.32, Gamma Berlina or anything else (Lancia) that may take me by suprise (needs 4 seats), but all these must be in absolute tip top condition with lowish mileage, few owners and excellent service history. Don't mind travelling to find right car and 2000HF, Gamma or other may be LHD.

Crikey Derek, its a small world.  Before I got into Lancias I used to live in Colne (2000-03) on Elizabeth Way...  Lovely little village with a great pub, surrounded by an awful lot of very flat stuff.  That's the era in which I coined my net ID, hence the 'fen'.

Hi Chris
Yes still lovely and still very flat. I've been here since 1996 in East Street, before that Bluntisham since 1980, so if you ever used any of the pubs we must have met. I've played guitar in all of them with my band Simply Dead (all old farts) so you may have suffered one of our performances. Where are you now?
