Title: Washers
Post by: welleyes on 09 January, 2011, 11:28:06 AM
I don't think any of our local MOT testers will pass a car without washers. It is not a problem with our other cars as they have opening screens but the Aprilia seems likely to cause aggravation. Has anyone managed to fit washers unobtrusively and with a bottle that does not get in the way?

This may help, when i was a MOT tester about 22 years ago, i seem to remember that i had to pass a car that came in with a washing up liquid bottle operated by the driver sitting in the driving seat, through an open window, as i had read someting in the testers manual, about something like, as long as the screen can be washed from the drivers seat that wwas ok, but since then the MOT has gone mad, not much more to test but lots more money!!

On my old Aprilia and the current Aurelia I have fitted washers, you can buy a hand operated pump and washer jets from most vintage suppliers, then I have used a small plastic bottle and put that in the battery compartment so it is hidden. It only needs a little water in it, enough to satisfy the MOT tester!!  I have mounted the pump vertically next to the steering column, so it can hardly be seen, it is arrowed in the photo. Ade.

I have done something similar with a washer from a 2CV (of which I have several lying around).

The Aurelia dash photo was taken some time ago when not all things were in their respective places. The two wires have now found a home and are connected under the passenger seat to an electric shock device to get rid of annoying passengers...... Mr Collins!

Modestine has an electric pump windscreen washer with only a black twin jet as evidence, the switch being one of the original ones on the dash and the bottle and pump hidden away behind the bulkhead. Not at all obvious - no one has ever commented on it.

The wires are there to bring the (missing) rubber floor mat into a circuit such that when you go to tune the radio you get the same signal touching the dial as when you let go - Lancia thought of everything...

...or maybe they're for something else.
