Title: Aurelia racing at Donington Park
Post by: apriliadriver on 03 October, 2010, 12:39:46 PM
At the VSCC race-meeting at Donington yesterday, a 'new' Aurelia racing in Mark Campbell's Pre-60 Sports Car series. This is the Series once hosted by the Aston Martin Owners Club until a schism last year, and now trying to re-establish itself under the VSCC umbrella. This was the Series in which Tim Burrett, Chris Gawne & the Kennedy's fielded a team of Aurelias in 2009.

The car, a late entry, was driven by John Densham, normally a Hotchkiss racer in the VSCC. No pictures, I am afraid, and indeed the B20 was, according to the accompanying engineer, still engineless and covered in garage guano up to 4 days ago.

In practise, was blistering quick in the first few laps and then faded with clutch overheating. In the race, again very quick, though erratic and sometimes off the track. The driver said that it was jumping out of gear.

I am sorry I did not record the UK registration. Anyone who was at Donington know any more about it ?

Hmmmm, the feeling of being overtaken, with my foot stuck to the buckhead, in my Aurelia, is an often too frequent one.
Hopefully next Sunday, last race of the year will be different.

Kevin - maybe you should do the same as that one and take the exterior mirrors off and have something on the dash top pointing at the sky.

Anyway - what a delight to see another Aurelia out to play.

I think this car may be 996 CVE, Chassis no. B20-2263, a very early 3rd series and the car featured at the start of the Series I Aurelia Parts catalogue where the chassis and engine number locations are illustrated!

I'd be glad to have this confirmed.

2263 belonged to John Porteuos in 1976 and was bought in 1978 by Peter Chrisp - no news of car or Peter for a very long time.

Sorry to hi-jack the thread, but I managed to finish the last race with no drama. Crossed the line first, but due to our weird handicap system I got a 4th finish place. Not too bad considering. One day I'm gonna lift that inner front wheel....photo is from last years race.

I went to school in Ely with a Tom Crisp (not 100pct sure of the spelling) and his dad ran a Thema (and very impressive it was too along the A10 into Cambridge) and had an Aurelia B20 in the garage looking very sorry for itself and a few spares under carpets etc round the garden.  Alas lost touch, both with Tom and that car.  It must have been there all of 1980 to 1985.
