Title: Horn wire in steering wheel
Post by: HBG on 10 August, 2024, 11:55:34 AM
Hi folks.

The horn as been a bit temperamental recently so I pulled off the steering wheel centre button as moving it had sometimes made the horn work.

What I found was a loose wire which when touched on a spring/ threaded insert allowed the horn to work.

The pic attached shows the part to connect to, but would anyone know what sort of connection it is before I remove the steering wheel? If possible I'd like to reattach the wire in the simplest way.

Thanks

Do I just need a short screw, crimp on terminal on the wire?

On closer inspection, it's a spring in there. What's the method of attaching the wire? Am I missing some sort of plug?

Is it a ball bearing/ compression spring arrangement? Can't really see in the image.

I don't really know. Having looked at the part on the Pieces Fulvia website, I can see what it does, but no clue as to the correct method of attaching a wire to it. I don't want to remove the steering boss if I don't have to, so for now I've put a very small crimped spade terminal on the end of the wire, folded it over and pushed it in the hole to contact the spring. It doesn't come out easily and the horn works fine.

I would prefer to do a proper job if only I knew what that was!

It should be a carbon brush IIRC - see parts, Is this your S2 wheel arrangement?

It is a spring loaded carbon brush. The one on my S1 was worn so I bought a suitibly sized electric motor brush. A much cheaper option than the one offered by Pieces-Fulvia.

Yes Tim, mine is as per the diagram. The diagram doesn't show how the wire attaches though.
