Title: Pulsating screeching front disc brake
Post by: FERGTS246 on 27 May, 2023, 09:30:44 AM
Hi, a few days in to a rally up in the mountains of northern Spain my front left brake (or wheel bearing?) started a pulsing screech that disappeared temporarily when turning left or putting the brakes on. I had the rally support mechanic look at it but he couldn't get the pads out to clean them and put grease on the back of them. I'm about to try myself and was wondering if anyone else has experienced problems getting disc pads out and if the symptoms (screeching going away when turning left and applying brakes) suggest whether it could be a wheel bearing. I'm assuming the extra braking required up mountains was making the brakes hot and expand or perhaps the bearing was getting hot and expanding? Any advice would be very welcome. Thanks Chris

Perhaps take the brake pistons off to access the pads, and also  check the bearing for play/ roughness.

Sounds like a small stone is lodged between the disc and the backing plate. If you are still experiencing this then drive backwards at a reasonable speed and jam on the brakes. This should dislodge the stone.

I found that the tabs on the pads were loose so I stuck them on and applied anti-screech grease. Screeching has gone.
