Title: Foam seat bases - anyone interested?
Post by: DELTONA on 15 July, 2021, 09:18:57 AM
Has the original ‘Dunlopillo’ foam in your front seat bases deteriorated? A simple test is to lift the base out of the seat frame and feel the foam through circular access holes, if the foam is brittle and crumbles then this is the sign the foam has lost its integrity.

I have approached a local foam supplier ( https://interfoam.co.uk ) who happens to be one of the UK’s premier providers of high quality, moulded polyurethane foam products and are happy to look into reproducing these bases.

The bases will be made from Polyurethane Moulded Foam. Manufactured and tested to FMVSS 302. Comfort and density will match automotive industry standard and calibrated to be the same as the original Fulvia bases.

Prices would likely to be no more than £70 per base.
I am looking to have a batch produced and wanted to ask if anyone would be interested?

Thank you, I'd certainly be interested in one, but is it only for Coupe?
As I think it might be different for series 1 Berlina.

Hi Brian, from what I can see from images online the Berlina seat bases do look different to the Coupe so it may not be suitable, but I am sure the experts amoung us here can confirm.

Many thanks
Pep

Interested for a friend currently restoring an early S1 coupe. Suitable for mailing it to Italy? Andres

Hello Andrea, yes shipping to Italy is not an issue if your friend is happy to pay for the shipping.
Thats great, I now have 5 people interested, the more numbers I get the more this becomes viable.

Thanks

A few years ago, I had the seat squabs of our GTE re-foamed by a local trimmer here in NE Italy. He did a lovely job cutting the foam from a block and completely  restitched the squabs as well for €100 for the 2 but funnily enough the new foam was too stiff and Jacky and I both sat a bit too high. Some modification was subsequently needed.
Can I therefore suggest you do some sort of 'dummy run ' with one squab to double check you dont have this problem. Specifications  for foam are one thing but comfort and location of seating are paramount  to driving pleasure.
Chris

Hi Chris, noted and yes I will of course be testing the prototype if this becomes viable. Although something tells me everyone will have an opinion and like most things you cannot please everyone. Interfoam can of course make the foam to different tolerances and I would be edging towards the softer more comfort side of things.

I’ve started repairing the seat foam of the front (and rear when I get around to it) seat cushions of one of my GTEs. I used an old electric kitchen knife to cut off the top of the cushions (and as described above they are latex foam or Dunlopillo to use the brand name), and the intention is to sculpt and glue new top sections to the original base. I’m going to use synthetic foam initially to see how that goes but it is also possible to source latex foam if needs be. I will try to load a couple of photos to demonstrate. Tom

Hello all, just a quick update the moulds for the seat base (Fulvia Coupe) are in production this week!

We are aiming for the first week of November to have a set fully finished and in my Fulvia which all going well should be at the NEC next month.
I have allowed for prototypes to get the 'comfort' as close to the lovely original ones.

Will keep you posted, thanks to all who showed an interest.

I too missed the post (but read about it in Viva Lancia). Does anyone know if they are also the correct profile for HF seats?  Mine lack the pronounced bolster around the front, but have been previously reupholstered so may be non-standard.

Thanks for any advice.

Glyn

Hello all, ...I have good news!

If you showed an interest in potentially purchasing a new seat base I have just emailed you, however...

I am pleased to report, that after much prototyping, testing and sitting! a small limited run batch has now been produced and ready for shipping. I attach below the advert that will run in the next edition of Viva Lancia however I wanted to give you first refusal as you were kind enough to be one of the first to respond.

As you will see, the advert details some information and shows images 2 of which are of the production mould and the new seat base - in addition should you want to see (after possibly 45 years) a short film clip of a brand new Fulvia Coupe seat base being made please click on this link: https://youtu.be/JmPIA3dTlWM

I have kept the cost to a minimum which just covers my outlay in the prototyping, casting and mould production - making the cost of a seat base £64.80 excluding delivery. There are 2 options of UK delivery; insured @ £17.62 / un-insured @ £11.04. I can of course ship internationally however I will require your address to give you a cost.

If you would like to place an order please reply to the email I sent you and I can either send my PayPal details of if you prefer my bank details. Should the email not have come through, this is my email address: giuseppe.rampello@ntlworld.com

Thanks
Giuseppe (Pep)
