Title: Series 3 coupe rear brake caliper hot Post by: Oliveoils on 01 March, 2021, 12:22:05 PM The nearside rear wheel is warm after a short drive and gets hot following heavy braking. The Handbrake does not seem to be binding so suspect the caliper may be sticking on . This looks like the original when compared to the offside caliper .
Any advice from the experienced would be appreciated on this. Plans are to remove the caliper clean it up and fit new seals (depending on piston condition) Where is the best source for a decent seal kit, are there any additonal parts I may need, and what pitfalls if any am I likely to encounter? Do I just bite the bullet and buy a new / refurbished caliper? Title: Re: Series 3 coupe rear brake caliper hot Post by: lancialulu on 01 March, 2021, 12:45:54 PM Depends on the piston and if you can loosen the bleed nipple. There should be a double tab washer for the 2 bolts holding the caliper and 2 shim washers between the caliper and the hub mounting holes. Not related to getting warm but are the correct pads fitted with the antisqueal shims and pad retaining springs. After many years these parts seem to go missing...

I removed the offending caliper today for an inspection and clean up. Pistons appear to be free with no leaks , but one certainly a bit tighter than the other. Cleaned of lots of accumulated crud from pad housings, back of pads /shims and replaced some very iffy and bent pad retainer split pins . Applied some copper grease to pads and re -assembled . I will now try the car for a few days and see what happens. Hoping that lack of use during lockdown has been the cause of the problem . which may resolve itself now by putting some miles on the car, but who knows....? Crawling around under the car revealed both exhaust hangers are shot, so .... yet another job at the weekend B4 the MOT!
